After a gang rape victim dies in India, a widespread debate about violence against women in the region has reignited yet again.

An unidentified 23-year-old medical student died on Saturday of a severe brain injury and internal damage caused by a Dec. 16 attack. Beaten, raped and pushed out of a moving bus, the medical student had been flown to a Singapore hospital on Thursday. At the time, she was in critical condition.

"The need of the hour is a dispassionate debate and inquiry into the critical changes that are required in societal attitudes," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement.

"I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agenda to help us all reach the end that we all desire - making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in."

The victim - who is now being called "Amanat," an Urdu word meaning "treasure" - has become a nationwide symbol for frequent and unrelenting violence against women in India. Rape and sexual assault are among the fastest-growing reported crimes in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Yet rape is rarely punished, with only 26.5 percent of reported incidents successfully prosecuted in 2010, according to The New York Times.??

New Delhi has the greatest number of sex crimes in India, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police data. According to the government, reported rape cases increased by almost 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Since the horrific attack on Dec. 16, the protests have become deafening. It is believed that most sex crimes in India go unreported and unpunished - and many citizens are starting to demand change.

Following news of the gang rape victim's death, the government was panicked that protests would become chaotic - and even violent. So the administration placed thousands of policemen around key areas, closing ten metro stations and some main roads in New Delhi. But more than 1,000 people gathered to protest, screaming that justice must be served. Some protesters recommended the death penalty for gang rape suspects.

Hundreds of protesters also hit the streets in the northern Indian city of Lucknow. Groups also spoke out in Hyderabad, which is in southern India, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Six men have been arrested in connection to the Dec. 16 gang rape, and according to India law they could receive the death penalty.

"She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome," Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer of the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, said in a statement.

The latest gang rape is only one in a string of incidents that has fueled unrest in the country.?On July 9, a teenage girl in Guwahati, in the northeastern state of Assam, was recorded by a television crew when a group of 10 - 15 men surrounded, beat?and stripped her. The group of men grew to about 40, and the crew continued taping.?

After the footage went viral, there was an outcry around the world questioning how the crew stood filming without trying to help the gang rape victim. For those in India, the incident was a horrible reminder of a gang rape that occurred in Mumbai on New Year's in 2008 when two women walked out of the Marriott hotel with their friends.

Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress and widow of former?Prime Minister of India,?Rajiv Gandhi?told protesters:?"Your voice has been heard. It deepens our determination to battle the pervasive and the shameful social attitudes that allow men to rape and molest women with such impunity."

Clinton vs. Rubio in 2016? Who Will Run?

COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney, in retrospect, was a vanilla candidate with weak convictions who the patchwork coalition of GOP voters begrudgingly accepted as a compromise.

There will be a large and vocal presence among Republicans, especially in the Tea Party and especially during the nominating process, calling for a more conservative candidate a la Rick Santorum.

But in the immediate aftermath of Obama's re-election several party leaders made clear that they felt softening the party line on social issues from marriage equality to immigration was the only way to fight the coalition built by Obama. Is it possible to marry the conservatism required for tea party support with the softer tone on social issues most party leaders believe is necessary to win a general election?

The few public opinion polls currently available show that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is the early favorite among those polled. Rubio's resume is basically perfect. A second generation Cuban-American from a swing state which the Republicans lost in 2012. The tea party publicly labeled him as their preferred Vice Presidential candidate weeks before Romney chose Rep. Paul Ryan.

And he was one of the first politicians to speak out after the election on what direction the Republican party needed to go in upcoming elections. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Marco Rubio in 2016.

For the Democrats, Joe Biden is an obvious choice. He left the door open when asked if he thought 2012 would be the last time he voted for himself. And the last time a Democratic president served two terms, his two-term vice president succeeded him as a candidate.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is a popular choice as well, as a liberal trailblazer on issues ranging from marriage equality to tax reform.

But the winning coalition built by Obama and his team depended on appeal to minorities. African Americans, women, LGBT voters, Hispanic voters and almost every other "minority" group in the country voted overwhelmingly for Obama.

The party would be foolish for turning its back on those groups in 2016. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will be stepping down in 2013 would be a clear nod to that coalition again. Her credentials as a senator, proactive First Lady, the nation's top diplomat, and experience on the 2012 trail make her the clear choice for Democrats in 2016, especially after a two-year break.

CAMP HILL, Pa. (Dec. 27, 2012) ? Every year, millions of Americans make New Year's resolutions to improve their health by eating better, exercising more or quitting smoking. Yet just weeks ? or even days ? into the New Year, many of these well-intentioned resolutions have already been scrapped. To help make 2013 different, Rite Aid is offering customers free extra support including Better You informational guides in all 4,600 stores, exclusive online health resources and expert advice from Rite Aid pharmacists. Rite Aid's wellness stores will also be offering free health screenings and informational sessions the week of Jan. 13.

"Making positive lifestyle changes is easier with the right support network," said Rite Aid Executive Vice President of Pharmacy Robert I. Thompson. "According to this month?s Gallup poll, pharmacists are again one of the most trusted of all professions. At Rite Aid, we encourage our customers to seek our pharmacists' expert advice on a range of health topics, such as tips to improve an on-the-go diet, ways to incorporate more fitness into a daily routine or approaches to quitting smoking once and for all."

Rite Aid pharmacists are available year-round to discuss simple approaches to healthier living including:

    • Eating better ? Pharmacists can provide diet tips and counsel on potential medication-dietary interactions such as the growing list of drugs that can have potentially dangerous side effects when taken with grapefruit. Me, My Food, & My Creativity: Christmas Planing - Rant, Menu, and ...

Blue, Silver & White Christmas Tree

This year we're hosting Christmas dinner at our house. ?In the past that meant twenty five people and a lot of work. ?This year, I'm happy to say we're only expecting fifteen people, yippie! ?I take this task on hesitantly, having a smaller guest list doesn't equate to less cleaning, prepping, or stress, it just means less money spent on food and beverages. ?It also means more quality time with the guests, which is great!

Regardless of the occasion, I always seem to stress myself out when entertaining more than ten people. ?It's one thing to plan a small event for someone else, that's easy I don't stress out over third party budgeted affairs such as; business luncheons, fundraisers, or special events. ?The guest list is a piece of cake with those types of functions, it's just a number when it comes to my career or volunteering. ?The pressure lies within, when I'm entertaining my toughest critics and the sky is the limit financially and creatively. ? I think the stress also comes hand and hand with executing all of my creations in one day and in a timely manner.

Lately all this stress quickly leads to a reminder about the meaning of Christmas. ?The most important part of the holidays is spending time with family and friends and remembering how blessed we all are to be on this earth. ?Shortly thereafter the reality of it all sets in... Christmas is so time consuming and expensive and is basically a glorified Thanksgiving with; wrapping paper, bows, gifts, holiday lights, Christmas trees, and celebrations throughout the month, apposed to one single day of eating.

That about does it, my ranting session has ended! ?Now on to the important stuff, food and beverages!

I've been "pinning" up a storm lately which is a newly welcomed holiday craze for me. ?I have a love hate relationship with Pinterest but, what isn't there to like about having millions of people compile oodles and oodles of fantastic holiday recipes and crafty ideas? ?Take a look at what's on the menu for Christmas...

    Specialty Cocktail

What are the holiday's without a tasty cocktail to take the edge off? ?My first priority in Christmas dinner planing was finding a light, yet fun beverage to serve. ?I decided on creative drinks, made with champagne/sparkling wine as a base ingredient! ?I am a bubbly lover, as many of you know and I will say that my go to choice for events such as this is the Asti, it's available at Trader Joe's, follow this link for a brief review and small photo of the label:?http://www.cellartracker.com/note.asp?iWine=29723&iNote=1841145. ?The Asti, aka "sparkling wine" is very affordable ($6.99/bottle) and it tastes great alone or accompanied by pretty much anything. ?I plan to have a variety of juice available for those not choosing to drink and it will double as a great mixer!

    The Main Course

In the past, Christmas day meals have been much like Thanksgiving meals, a smorgasbord of tasty food. ?This year I've decided to keep it simple; fun beverages, ?one main course and a semi homemade dessert. ?I have, however, decided to do a main course that is pretty involving, as many home cooks would take one look at the ingredient list and continue the hunt for something else to make. ?The main course will be Juila Childs' Beef Bourguignon, http://cooking.knopfdoubleday.com/2009/07/13/julia-childs-boeuf-bourguignon-recipe/. ? I have made this three or four times in the past, but never for fifteen people and I will be tripling the recipe. ?The main reason I chose this dish was because it's amazingly good and everything can be made the day before and the flavor and quality won't be compromised! ?If anything letting it sit over night increases the flavor of the entree.

    The Main Course Meat
Thursday I decided to go buy the meat and unfortunately the first little hiccup in my well thought out plan occurred. ?The meat was on sale for one day only at a hispanic grocery store, meaning my espanol will be put to the test. ?I arrive at the meat department, there isn't any cuts of meat in the designated spot next to the sign. ?I ask the guy behind the counter if there is any left and he doesn't understand my question, I point. ?Oooohhh! Si! The meat department associate holds up a great cut of beef. ?I then say in spanish, I'll take 12 pounds, will you cut the meat into 2" cubes for me please? ?No comprendo... Ugh. ? He then goes and finds another associate, comes back with him and they both look at me with a blank look (I'm waiting for him to speak in english or spanish so I can figure out how to say what I want)...silence. ?I say can you please cut the meat into two inch pieces, OH! Yea, ok the new guy then translates to the original guy. ?Then they come back with a sample cut, 4" x 3", I say in half please. ?I come back when it's all cut to my dismay the meat has bones! ?They didn't cut the meat part into 2" cubes really because some of the cuts were actually all bone! ?I haven't come up with a backup plan yet, I'm going to see if I can salvage the meat tomorrow.

    The Wine
The most important part of the entree is using a good red wine, for this I decided to stick within a budget of $20, I did however need four bottles of wine. ?I made a trip to Big Lots where I was happy to find three, 1.5 litter bottles of Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir! ?I only needed to purchase two bottles and I came in under budget at $19! ?This wine normally sells for $11-$25 a bottle depending on the year and I was able to get the equivalent of four bottles for less than $20, SCORE! I guess you win some and you lose some, win on the wine, lose on the meat.

    Dessert

We're going to have cannoli's for dessert! ?This is my first time making them and I pondered over ordering cannoli molds and making the shells from scratch or purchasing pre-made shells at an italian deli (both Caesars and Luigis carry them). ?I looked into making them first and after five minutes of research the decision was crystal clear, I would purchase them! ?Check out this video of how to make homemade cannoli shells;?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DuHPdo_qA4. ?Now with Christmas being only a few days away both the delis didn't have enough shells in stock. ?Luckily Luigis said they would be getting a shipment of them in the next day. ?Perfect.

Wish me luck in the coming days, I'm going to need it.

Nipping At The Heels Of Skype, VoIP Provider Rebtel Passes 20M Users, $80M In Sales And A 2-Year Streak In The Black

logoRebtelCMYKWhen people think of consumer VoIP services, the first name to come to mind for many is Skype. But while Microsoft’s recent acquisition begins to explore a new role as a social advertising network, the world’s number-two VoIP provider, Rebtel, is hoping to gain some new ground. The Stockholm-based company, which has been in operation since 2006, today is announcing that it has passed 20 million active users, with 2012 revenues of $80 million and projected turnover of $100 million for 2013. It has also seen a 250% increase in app downloads and paying users since 2011, with overall users growing currently at a rate of 500,000 each month. The business of over-the-top telephony services is a hot space right now, with companies like Whatsapp nabbing business away from carriers by becoming users’ default mobile messaging service.?As of August 2012 Whatsapp was delivering 10 billion messages per day. And as we’ve said in the past, we’ve heard that its been an?acquisition target for Facebook. Rebtel very much fits into that mold by offering a more cost-effective way of making calls on mobile devices, with a particular emphasis on long-distance calls that can cost a fortune otherwise if made via a mobile network.?”Our average users are consumers with a lot of first- and second-generation immigrants among them,”?Bernstr?m notes, so many of them will want to be calling family abroad. And while we don’t know whether Skype is profitable today (it wasn’t when Microsoft bought it), Rebtel’s CEO?Andreas Bernstr?m tells me that his company is, and has been for the past two years. That’s one reason why Rebtel has yet to raise more money since picking up a Series A round of $20 million from Index Ventures and Benchmark the year it was founded. “We have $10 million in the bank today,” he tells me. That strategy may change in the future, as Rebtel gears up for further expansion. Earlier this month, it announced a new line of business as a white-label VoIP provider, releasing an SDK so that developers can incorporate Rebtel’s VoIP service into their apps. Rebtel is primarily targeting mobile developers with the service, because that is where Rebtel itself focuses most of its business, with apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone (in addition to PCs). As a point of comparison, although Skype makes a big point of?how popular its mobile apps are, Bernstr?m says that about 90%

Syrian vice president says army can't win, seeks talks

BEIRUT?? Syria's vice president has acknowledged that the army cannot defeat the rebel forces trying to topple the regime and called for a negotiated settlement to save the country from ruin.

The rare, candid comments by Farouk al-Sharaa, a longtime close aide to President Bashar Assad's family, suggested his embattled regime may be contemplating an exit strategy as rebel forces move closer to the capital Damascus. He spoke in an interview published Monday by Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar. "I don't see that what the security forces and army units are doing will lead to a definitive victory."

Al-Sharaa pushed for a negotiated political settlement that includes the formation of a national unity government with wide jurisdiction.

His comments coincided with a peace plan for Syria outlined by Iranian officials on Sunday. It would be capped by Syrian elections that presumably could usher in a new leader.

CSN: Cutler can't stink it up again vs. Packers

    December 15, 2012, 8:15 pm

In the wake of the Bears? loss to the Minnesota Vikings, coach Lovie Smith indirectly explained the biggest single reason why the Green Bay Packers have dominated his Bears since Aaron Rodgers succeeded Brett Favre.
    ?
?Their defense out-performed our defense yesterday,? Smith said last Monday.
    ?
He wasn?t talking about the Packers. And defenses don?t face defenses, obviously.
    ?
But the simplest reason why the Packers have been better than the Bears for the past several years is that their quarterback out-performs the Bears? quarterback.
    ?
The Packers have survived and even flourished this year and in 2010 despite an avalanche of injuries. The reason has been that Rodgers has established himself in the echelon of quarterbacks like Favre, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and other elites who are not only great in their own right, but makes others around them better.
    ?
Jay Cutler does not. The opposite; he makes himself worse in games against his organization?s foremost opponent.
    ?
In the six and a half games Cutler has played against Green Bay (he was out for the second half of the NFC Championship game and all of game 15 last season), the Bears have scored a total of seven touchdowns.
    ?
Cutler has never had a game against the Packers in which he has not thrown at least one interception. Counting the 2010 NFC title game, he has thrown 17 interceptions vs. eight touchdown passes.
    ?
His regular-season passer rating against the Packers is 60.5. Rodgers? is?not.
    ?
Indeed, Rodgers posted a 99.8 rating in the teams? first 2012 game despite taking five sacks. Cutler?s rating, with seven sacks and four interceptions, was 28.2. That was his lowest against the Packers and carries more concerning significance because he at last had the precise No. 1 receiver he wanted. And Green Bay cornerback Tramon Williams caught exactly as many of Cutler?s passes (two) as that No. 1 receiver, Brandon Marshall did.
    ?
?We missed some opportunities with Brandon last time; I think he?d be the first to tell you that,? Cutler said. ?But they?re going to do a good job of taking him away so for us to be successful down the road, we?re going to have to have other guys make plays for us.?
    ?
That first ?other guy? needs to be Cutler. Because against Rodgers and the Packers, he rarely has been:
    ?
    Yr/Gm?? ?Cutler?? ?Rodgers

    ?09
    , 1?? ?43.2?? ??? ?92.0?? ?
    ?? ??? 2?? ?74.9?? ??? ?88.9
    ?
    ?10, 1?? ?82.5?? ??? ?92.5
    ?? ??? 2?? ?43.5?? ??? ?89.7
    NFC Ch.?? ?31.8?? ??? ?55.4
    ?
    ?11, 1?? ?78.9?? ??? ?111.4
    ?? ??? 2?? ?(out)?? ??? 142.7
    ?
    ?12, 1?? ?28.2?? ??? ?99.8
    ?
Passer rating is not the sole measure of a quarterback and a criticism is that its formula is structured in a way that weights interceptions disproportionately. But in a game so often determined by turnovers, it is perhaps an apt standard to use in comparing Bears-Packers quarterbacks.
    ?
?I often find myself quoting a great teacher of mine, Chuck Knox,? said offensive coordinator Mike Tice. ?And he used to say all the time constantly, ?you have to make the plays you?re afforded the opportunity to make.??
    ?
Sometime on Sunday, maybe on the first or second possession to answer a Green Bay score, maybe in the fourth quarter to help save a season, Cutler will have to make the plays he too often hasn?t. As we've reported in great detail over the past month, customers hoping to pick up the Nexus 4 directly from the Google Play Store haven't had the easiest time ordering the device. Even after dealing with a tumultuous ordering process, some in the UK have found that their orders had missed the shipping window they'd been given by Google Play.

As a result, some disgruntled customers decided to go straight to the top to get answers, reaching out to Google UK & Ireland Managing Director Dan Cobley on his Google+ page. Today Cobley has responded with an update on the situation, an apology to those affected, and a shipping refund for those whose orders had missed the quoted 3-5 day window. The bottom line is that orders with pre-Christmas shipping estimates should be processed in the coming week.

In his Google+ message, Cobley also addresses the subject of stock levels, saying supplies from Nexus 4 manufacturer LG have been "scarce and erratic." The first wave of Nexus 4 stock sold out in under an hour, and the second wave was back-ordered by over one month in under a day.

Check past the break for Cobley's message in full.

Passing the alcohol test: Fundamental properties of molecules have not changed during the past seven billion years

Dec. 14, 2012 ? The mass ratio of protons and electrons is deemed to be a universal constant. And rightly so, as the latest radio-astronomy observations of a distant galaxy have shown. Scientists at the VU University of Amsterdam and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn used the 100-metre radio telescope in Effelsberg to measure absorption lines of the methanol molecule at a number of characteristic frequencies. The researchers analysed the spectrum of the simplest of all the alcohols in a very distant galaxy. The result: to a high degree of accuracy molecules and molecular matter have the same properties today as they did seven billion years ago. According to this finding, the mass ratio of protons and electrons in particular has changed by less than one hundred thousandth of a percent in this period.

Measurements are the only way that physicists can find out about fundamental universal constants such as the proton-to-electron ratio. Although all terrestrial experiments produce the same value for this ratio, it would theoretically be possible for the constant to have a different value in different regions of the universe or at different times in its history. The methanol molecule is a suitable sensor for detecting such deviations.

A number of lines in the radio spectrum of this molecule would exhibit a significant frequency shift if the proton-to-electron mass ratio changed, while other lines would not be affected by this shift. A group at the VU University of Amsterdam only recently found out which property makes methanol such a sensitive sensor: ultimately it is a quantum tunnel effect which occurs if the internal rotation of the molecule is impeded. This effect leads to very high values for the sensitivity coefficients of the corresponding spectral lines, which can all be calculated individually.

"This makes the methanol molecule an ideal test case in order to discover a possible change in the proton-to-electron mass ratio over time," says Wim Ubachs, Professor at the VU University of Amsterdam and head of the physics department. "We therefore proposed a search for line radiation from methanol in the distant universe in order to compare the structure of the molecules thus found with the structure of today's methanol in laboratory experiments."

The team observed a galaxy where a number of different molecules had already been observed. The galaxy, which is in the line of sight of a high-intensity radio source called PKS1830-211, is about seven billion light years away from Earth. The scientists aimed for four different line transitions in the radio spectrum of the methanol molecule with their search program. And they were actually able to see all four lines with the aid of the 100-metre radio telescope in Effelsberg.

"As an optical astronomer it has been an interesting experience to carry out observations at the large wavelengths which occur in the radio range," says Julija Bagdonaite, doctoral student at the VU University of Amsterdam and lead author of the publication. "The methanol molecule had absorbed these radio waves seven billion years ago, and the waves have carried along its fingerprint from the distant past on their passage to Earth."

By analysing the quantum structure of the methanol molecule the researchers were able to deduce that two of its spectral lines which they observed at frequencies around 25 GHz were influenced hardly at all by a change in the proton-to-electron mass ratio. The other two lines reacted much more sensitively to a modification of this parameter.

"The source we investigated is by far the most suitable of all our observational objects for investigating the validity of our local physics even in very distant exotic environments," says Christian Henkel from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. "It would be fantastic if we could find more sources of this type which we could use to look even further back into the past."

The scientists also included systematic effects of the observations in the evaluation of the data and thus obtained the following result: in the course of the past seven billion years the mass ratio of protons and electrons has changed by a factor of 10-7 at most and is therefore rightly deemed to be a universal constant. This result can definitely be interpreted to mean that the structure of the molecular matter as derived from spectral observations agrees very accurately with the structure seven billion years ago. Possible deviations amount to a mere one hundred thousandth of a percent or even less.

"If we were really to find deviations in this fundamental constant, we would have a problem with our understanding of the foundations of physics," concludes Karl Menten, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. "Most importantly, this would violate Einstein's equivalence principle, the cornerstone of the general theory of relativity."

People react as they gather to mourn for the victims of 1937 Nanjing Massacre at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in Nanjing in east China's Jiangsu province on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012.

The Associated Press reports ??Air raid sirens rang again in Nanjing on Thursday to mark 75 years after a bloody invasion by the Japanese imperial army that remains as one of the most sensitive friction points in the shared history of two Asian powers.?

On December 13, 1937, the Chinese city fell to Japanese forces; what followed was a massacre of war prisoners, soldiers and citizens, known in the West as the "Rape of Nanking."?China maintains as many as 300,000 people died; Japan says the toll was far less.

Climate warming unlikely to cause near-term extinction of ancient Amazon trees, but multiple threats to the forest remain

Dec. 13, 2012 ? A new genetic analysis has revealed that many Amazon tree species are likely to survive human-caused climate warming in the coming century, contrary to previous findings that temperature increases would cause them to die out.

However, the authors of the new study warn that extreme drought and forest fires will impact Amazonia as temperatures rise, and the over-exploitation of the region's resources continues to be a major threat to its future. Conservation policy for the Amazon should remain focused on reducing global greenhouse-gas emissions and preventing deforestation, they said.

The study by University of Michigan evolutionary biologist Christopher Dick and his colleagues demonstrates the surprising age of some Amazonian tree species -- more than 8 million years -- and thereby shows that they have survived previous periods as warm as many of the global warming scenarios forecast for the year 2100.

The paper is scheduled for online publication Dec. 13 in the journal Ecology and Evolution. The new study is at odds with earlier papers, based on ecological niche-modeling scenarios, which predicted tree species extinctions in response to relatively small increases in global average air temperatures.

"Our paper provides evidence that common Amazon tree species endured climates warmer than the present, implying that -- in the absence of other major environmental changes -- they could tolerate near-term future warming under climate change," said Dick, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and acting director of the U-M Herbarium.

But study co-author Simon Lewis of University College London and the University of Leeds cautioned that "the past cannot be compared directly with the future."

"While tree species seem likely to tolerate higher air temperatures than today, the Amazon forest is being converted for agriculture and mining, and what remains is being degraded by logging and increasingly fragmented by fields and roads," Lewis said. "Species will not move as freely in today's Amazon as they did in previous warm periods, when there was no human influence. Similarly, today's climate change is extremely fast, making comparisons with the past difficult.

"With a clearer understanding of the relative risks to the Amazon forest, we conclude that direct human impacts, such as forest clearance for agriculture or mining, should remain a focus of conservation policy," Lewis said. "We also need more aggressive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to minimize the risk of drought and fire impacts to secure the future of most Amazon tree species."

Dick and his colleagues used a molecular clock approach to determine the ages of 12 widespread Amazon tree species, including the kapok and the balsa. Then they looked at climatic events that have occurred since those tree species emerged. In general, they inferred that the older the age of the tree species, the warmer the climate it has previously survived.

The researchers determined that nine of the tree species have been around for at least 2.6 million years, seven have been present for at least 5.6 million years, and three have existed in the Amazon for more than 8 million years.

"These are surprisingly old ages," Dick said. "Previous studies have suggested that a majority of Amazon tree species may have originated during the Quaternary Period, from 2.6 million years ago to the present."

Air temperatures across Amazonia in the early Pliocene Epoch (3.6 million to 5 million years ago) were similar to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projections for the region in 2100 using moderate carbon-emission scenarios. Air temperatures in the late Miocene Epoch (5.3 to 11.5 million years ago) were about the same as IPCC projections for the region in 2100 using the highest carbon-emission scenarios.

The 12 tree species used in the study are broadly representative of the Amazon tree flora. Primary forest collection sites were in central Panama, western Ecuador and Amazonian Ecuador. Additional collections were made in Brazil, Peru, French Guiana and Bolivia. Other plant samples were obtained from herbarium specimens.

"The most lasting finding of our study may be the discovery of ancient geographic variation within widespread species, indicating that many rain forest tree species were widely distributed before the major uplift of the northern Andes," said co-author Eldredge Bermingham of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

To determine the age of each tree species, the researchers extracted and sequenced DNA from plant samples, then looked at the number of genetic mutations contained in those sequences. Using a molecular clock approach and population genetic models, they estimated how long it would take for each of the tree populations to accumulate the observed number of mutations, which provided a minimum age for each species.

"An important caveat is that because we've been in a cold period over the past 2 million years -- basically the whole Quaternary Period -- some of the trees' adaptations to warmth tolerance may have been lost," Dick said. "Additional research is needed to test whether this has occurred."

The Ecology and Evolution paper is titled "Neogene origins and implied warmth tolerance of Amazon tree species." In addition to Dick, Bermingham and Lewis, Mark Maslin of University College London is a co-author. Financial support for the research was provided by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the University of Michigan, the National Science Foundation and the Royal Society.
