Cain denies report of sexual harassment

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain signs a campaign sign for 11-year-old David Strickland Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 in Huntsville, Ala. Presidential candidate Herman Cain is full of confidence about his 2012 prospects. It's been weeks since he's set foot in first-voting Iowa or New Hampshire, yet he said Saturday he said expects to finish first or second in each state. He's also predicting victory in South Carolina, which will hold the South's first presidential contest in 2012. "And then, look out," Cain said Saturday before plunging into a crowd of football tailgaters at Samford University, a Baptist-affiliated school in Alabama. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain's campaign denied allegations Sunday that he was twice accused of sexual harassment while he was the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

In a statement to The Associated Press, his campaign disputed a Politico report that said Cain had been accused of sexually suggestive behavior toward at least two female employees.

The report said the women signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them five-figure financial payouts to leave the association and barred them from discussing their departures. Neither woman was identified.

The report was based on anonymous sources and, in one case, what the publication said was a review of documentation that described the allegations and the resolution.

Cain's campaign told the AP that the allegations were not true, and amounted to unfair attacks.

"Inside-the-Beltway media have begun to launch unsubstantiated personal attacks on Cain," spokesman J.D. Gordon said in a written statement. "Dredging up thinly sourced allegations stemming from Mr. Cain's tenure as the Chief Executive Officer at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, political trade press are now casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts."

Asked if Cain's campaign was denying the report, Gordon said, "Yes."

"These are baseless allegations," Gordon said in a second interview later Sunday evening. "To my knowledge, this is not an accurate story."

Cain plans to continue with several planned appearances in Washington on Monday. He is slated to discuss his tax plan at the American Enterprise Institute, appear at the National Press Club and hold a healthcare briefing on Capitol Hill.

Cain ? a self-styled outsider relatively new to the national stage ? is facing a new level of scrutiny after a burst of momentum in the race for the GOP presidential nomination. He's been steadily at or near the top of national surveys and polls in early presidential nominating states, competitive with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The former pizza company executive has been pointing to his long record in business to argue that he has the credentials needed to be president during a time of economic strife.

In its report, Politico said it confronted Cain early Sunday outside of the CBS News Washington bureau, where he had just been interviewed on "Face the Nation."

"I am not going to comment on that," he told Politico when asked specifically about one of the woman's claims.

When asked if he had ever been accused of harassment by a woman, he responded, Politico said, by asking the reporter, "Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment?"

A message seeking comment from Peter Kilgore, listed on the National Restaurant Association website as its chief legal counsel, was not immediately returned.

Doctor's defense expert: It's plausible Michael Jackson caused his own death

An expert in anesthesiology testified in defense of Michael Jackson's doctor, saying the pop star may have given himself a fatal dose of drugs and that the prosecution's theory does not fit the evidence.

Michael Jackson may have caused his own death by taking a large quantity of sedative pills and giving himself an intravenous dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol in the final moments of his life, an expert in anesthesiology testified Friday.

Dr. Paul White told the jury at the manslaughter trial of the pop legend?s personal physician that the most plausible explanation for the drug levels detected in Mr. Jackson?s system after his death is that he swallowed pills and injected himself with propofol when his doctor was out of the room.

Defense Attorney Michael Flanagan asked Dr. White whether he would expect ?adverse consequences? if Jackson quickly injected a dose of propofol into himself after already ingesting a significant quantity of lorazepam pills and after having been injected with the sedatives lorazepam and midazolam.

?I believe it could potentially have lethal consequences,? White said.

The testimony came on the 20th day of the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray in the Los Angeles County Courthouse. The Las Vegas cardiologist is accused of administering a fatal dose of propofol while trying to treat Jackson?s chronic insomnia.

Dr. Murray?s lawyers maintain that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose. Murray has pleaded not guilty.

White is believed to be the defense?s last witness. His cross examination is set to begin on Monday. The case could go to the jury later next week.

Murray had been hired for $150,000 a month to serve as Jackson?s physician during a planned series of concerts in London. With rehearsals escalating and the concert fast approaching, Murray was attempting to treat Jackson?s complaints of lack of sleep. For nearly two months the doctor had been administering nightly intravenous doses of propofol in the bedroom of Jackson?s rented mansion.

The anesthetic is not a recognized sleep aid and is usually administered by a trained anesthesiologist in a fully-equipped hospital or clinic. But Murray surrendered to Jackson?s insistence that propofol was the only medicine strong enough to help him sleep.

Murray set up an IV system in Jackson?s bedroom. Medical experts testified that the practice was unheard of and extremely dangerous.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009. An autopsy said the cause of death was ?acute propofol intoxication.? Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter and faces up to four years in prison and loss of his medical license, if convicted.

Dr. White?s suggestion that Jackson self-administered a lethal combination of drugs that killed him stands in sharp contrast to the testimony of the prosecution?s expert, Steven Shafer. The Columbia University professor and research scientist said Jackson most likely died while receiving a continuous infusion of propofol set up by Murray.

Mr. Shafer said Murray set up the propofol drip and then left the room. At some point, Jackson stopped breathing and died, Shafer said, because Murray was not at Jackson?s bedside to open his air way. Shafer said administration of propofol requires an array of resuscitative equipment, electronic monitoring equipment with alarms, and constant vigilance by the attending physician.

He said Murray had effectively abandoned his patient.

Defense attorneys are working to counter Shafer?s testimony and trying to raise doubts in the minds of the jurors about how Jackson died.

White said Shafer?s theory of the propofol drip did not fit with evidence recovered in Jackson?s bedroom. And he said Shafer?s theory that Murray gave Jackson a series of injections of the sedative lorazepam does not fit with drug concentrations found during the autopsy.

White testified that Jackson most likely gave himself a rapid injection of 25 milligrams of propofol between 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon.

He testified that his self-injection scenario better fit the known evidence than Shafer?s offered scenario.

?I cannot understand how it is possible that [Jackson] got a three hour infusion [of propofol] when the evidence does not show an infusion set up and the level of drug in the blood is not consistent with? Jackson receiving an entire bottle of propofol, White said.

On Monday, prosecutors are expected to challenge White?s scenario. In addition they are likely to closely question White about whether Murray followed recognized procedures for administration of propofol and whether he took adequate safeguards. Analysts say prosecutors will likely argue that even if Jackson self-administered the drug, Murray still had a duty as a physician to monitor his patient at all times.

(AP) ? State-run Syrian TV is broadcasting footage of another massive pro-regime gathering in support of President Bashar Assad as authorities try to galvanize supporters in the face of a seven-month uprising.

Thousands took to the streets on Thursday in the coastal city of Latakia, carrying Syrian flags and chanting in support of reform measures that Assad recently proclaimed.

The large turnout was the second in as many days, after a similar rally Wednesday in the capital, Damascus.

The uprising against Assad is the most serious threat to his family's four-decade dynasty. Protest leaders reject any dialogue with the regime while it continues its brutal crackdown, which the U.N. says has killed more than 3,000 people since March.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Arab officials held a "frank and friendly" meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad Wednesday, the head of the delegation said at the beginning of a regional effort to resolve a bloody 7-month revolt, the most serious challenge yet to the four decade Assad dynasty.

The Arab committee is trying to start talks between Assad's government and its opponents, but protest leaders reject any dialogue with the regime while it continues its brutal crackdown, which the U.N. says has killed more than 3,000 people since March.

Activists said at least 15 civilians were killed Wednesday in military operations across the country, 12 of them in the flashpoint central city of Homs.

The meeting in Damascus between the Arab ministerial committee and Assad came hours after tens of thousands of Syrians packed a main square in the Syrian capital, chanting, "the people want Bashar Assad." Assad succeeded his father, and together the family has ruled Syria for more than 40 years.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani was quoted as saying that the Arab delegation felt that the Syrian government is eager to work with the Arab committee "in order to reach a solution."

Sheik Hamad told reporters that the Arab committee and the Syrian government will hold another meeting on Sunday either in Syria or in Qatar.

"What is important for us is that there are no victims from any side in Syria," Sheik Hamad told reporters. "The fighting should stop and the dialogue should begin between the Syrian brothers so that, God willing, they agree on points that fulfill people demands."

Syria has rejected previous Arab initiatives, and it was not clear if this would be different, or if the regime was trying to gain time to try to crush the uprising.

The Arab officials' visit follows a meeting in Cairo last week by the 22-nation Arab League, which gave Syria until the end of the month to end military operations, release detainees arrested in the crackdown, and start a dialogue with the opposition.

Human Rights Watch quoted Syrian activists as saying at least 186 protesters and residents have been killed in Syria since the Cairo meeting.

The activists said towns and villages in southern and central Syria, as well as some areas in the north and east, closed their businesses in compliance with an opposition call for a general strike.

Amateur videos showed shops closed in different parts of the country as well as counter-demonstrations to the one held in Damascus. One of the largest took place in the village of Halfaya in the central province of Hama.

A giant banner raised on an electricity pole there read: "To the Arab League. How do you want us to have a dialogue with the killer of children and women when all laws say that the killer should not be negotiated with, but put on trial?"

The Syrian government has staunchly defended its crackdown on protesters, saying it is the target of a foreign conspiracy.

Bassma Kodmani, spokeswoman for the broad-based opposition group, the Syrian National Council, said it is "impossible" to talk about a dialogue within the current security crackdown.

"And even if the right conditions for dialogue prevail, the only thing to discuss would be a roadmap for the peaceful transfer of power," she told The Associated Press.

"Russia gives Bashar international protection, Iran gives him weapons, and Arabs give him time," read a banner carried by protesters in northern Syria Tuesday evening. "No dialogue with the killer of children," read another.

Human Rights Watch called on the Arab ministers to demand that the government allow independent, civilian monitors into Syria to observe the behavior of security forces.

In a pro-government rally timed to coincide with the Arab ministers' visit, tens of thousands of Syrians carrying white, red and black flags and posters of Assad gathered at Damascus' Omayyad square .

The opposition says authorities regularly stage such rallies in support of the embattled leader.

Assad still has significant support among Syrians, including those who benefited financially from the regime, minority groups who fear they will be targeted if the Sunni majority takes over, and others who see no clear and safe alternative to the president. He also still has the loyalty of the bulk of the armed forces, key to his remaining in power.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other rights groups said 15 civilians were killed Wednesday in shootings by security forces nationwide, including 12 in the rebellious city of Homs. The Observatory also reported 11 soldiers were killed in Hama province when the bus they were traveling in was hit by a rocket propelled grenade.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, also said 15 people were killed Wednesday nationwide, most of them in Homs.

In Washington. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland expressed hope that U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford would return to Damascus in a month. He was withdrawn this week after the U.S. said "credible threats" were made against him. Ford often defied Syrian demands that he refrain from visiting areas where protests are strong.

She said the U.S. will expect Syria's government to stop its attacks on Ford through state-sponsored media.

"He's bought his Thanksgiving turkey for his embassy staff," Nuland told reporters. "So that's our expectation. It'll be, you know, sometime before Thanksgiving," which is in late November.

Genes Could Highlight Plavix Users at Clot Risk After Stent (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Oct. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists have identified mutations in three genes that make certain patients more likely to have a potentially fatal blood clot after undergoing heart stent placement.

The genes are involved in metabolism of the drug Plavix (clopidogrel), a widely used blood thinner, and in platelet formation, according to a study published in the Oct. 26 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"This goes back to the idea of tailored medicine but [gene testing] is not feasible to do on everybody," said Dr. John Gassler, associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who was not involved with the research. "This study is very strongly thought-provoking but I don't think it can alter practice until it's been evaluated [further]."

The authors of the study also reported that a higher initial dose of Plavix reduced the risk of stent thrombosis (blood clot formation), while using proton pump inhibitors -- common drugs to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stomach ulcers -- upped the risk.

People who get stents to prop open blocked arteries routinely receive two different blood thinners to reduce the risk of stent thrombosis. This has cut the rate of stent thrombosis tremendously, but up to 4 percent of patients still end up with this devastating complication, according to background information in the study.

The study authors analyzed 23 gene variants in 15 genes in 123 patients who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention in France and who had experienced stent thrombosis.

These patients were compared to 246 similar patients who had not had stent thrombosis.

Three genotypes and two clinical factors -- Plavix loading (initial) dose and use of proton pump inhibitors -- all affected the risk of stent thrombosis.

When the investigators combined the clinical and risk factors, they found that those in the highest risk category had a sevenfold increased risk of stent thrombosis versus patients with the lowest risk profile.

"When we combine everything we have a very good predictive value, which is around 80 percent," said study co-first author, Dr. Jean-Sebastien Hulot, director of Pharmacogenomics & Personalized Therapeutics of the Cardiovascular Research Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

But while the clinical variables are easy enough to assess, genetic information is not so easy to come by, at least not yet. Right now, results of genetic tests take about a week to come back.

"It would make sense to have the results in a couple of hours and some companies are developing this kind of testing," Hulot said. "In the near future we can have the results in hours. The markers aren't valuable right now but they will be in the near future."

The Seven Lifestyle Changes That Can Add a Decade to Your LifeCardiologist Dr. Clyde Yancy has compiled a list of the seven main lifestyle changes that lead to a longer-than-average lifespan, and while they're mostly common sense, it's compelling to be reminded of just how much of a difference the right changes can make. In this case, Yancy claims that adapting all of the strategies can add a decade or more of healthy years to the average lifespan.

Dr. Yancy keys in on these seven factors:

1. Get Active
2. Know and control cholesterol levels
3. Follow a healthy diet
4. Know and control blood pressure
5. Achieve and maintain a healthy weight
6. Manage diabetes
7. Be tobacco free

None of these should come as much of a surprise, but seeing them in one place certainly adds weight to each of them. Pressure on for Nevada GOP to change caucus date (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Nevada Republicans are under national pressure to delay the state's presidential nomination contest.

More than 200 members of the state party planned to decide at a meeting Saturday in Las Vegas when Nevada's caucuses should be held.

New Hampshire's secretary of state, Bill Gardner, has threatened to hold his state's primary in early December to avoid wedging it between the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3 and the Nevada vote, currently set for Jan. 14.

Several Republican presidential candidates, including former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and businessman Herman Cain, have pledged their support to New Hampshire and boycott Nevada's contest if it isn't pushed back. That led the Republican National Committee to suggest that Nevada move to Feb. 4.

Nevada GOP leaders have indicated that they support the change. But it's not clear whether rank-and-file members will go along.

The Nevada Republican Party's central committee is a diverse group that in the past has refused to heed the GOP's mainstream leadership.

The state party's executive director, David Gallagher, told The Associated Press on Friday that GOP leaders will commit to whatever decision comes from the meeting.

Nevada, Iowa and South Carolina moved their contests into January after Florida said it would violate national party rules and hold its primary on Jan. 31.

But only Nevada was subject to boycott threats Nevada Republicans initially laughed it off, but reconsidered after the national chairman, Reince Priebus, began calling for a compromise this week.

If Nevada moves to Feb. 4, it would no longer be third in nomination calendar and could be overshadowed by Florida's vote. But shifting the date would allow the state to keep all of its delegates when national Republicans convene in Tampa, Fla., next year to name their nominee.

For all the buzz around Samsung's latest hi-def smartphone, the absence of one little word has largely been glossed over. That word is "Plus" -- the wizened Galaxy S II has a "Super AMOLED Plus" display, for example, whereas the sparkly Galaxy Nexus is merely "Super AMOLED." Did the marketeers simply forget those extra hyperbolic keystrokes, or does the difference actually mean something?

Well, regrettably, it does. Samsung uses "Plus" to refer to full RGB displays, in which each pixel possesses its own trio of red, green and blue sub-pixels. Meanwhile, a non-Plus display uses a cheaper PenTile system -- which forces pixels to share each other's sub-pixels. Aside from potential hygiene issues, this results in a lower overall sub-pixel density, reduced sharpness and worse color rendition. We saw the difference clearly enough when Engadget Spanish microscopically compared the original non-Plus Galaxy S against the GS II, and now the folks at FlatPanelsHD have undertaken a more up-to-date comparison at the source link. The upshot? They calculated that, despite its 4.65-inch screen size, the Galaxy Nexus has the same number of sub-pixels as the 3.5-inch iPhone 4/4S. Think of a word with no r, g or b in it, and you eventually arrive at "disappointed."

Spoiler Alert: Steve Jobs Enjoyed Many Types Of Tea, Book Says

steve jobs1Like many of you I've been watching the steady stream of incremental Steve Jobs-related news stories for the past couple days, resulting from the imminent launch of Walter Issacson's Jobs biography: Jobs came up with the name Apple while on a fruitarian diet, he gave up Christianity at age 13, he loved King Lear, he was disappointed in President Obama, his first job was at Atari, he valued simplicity, utility and beauty, he hated Fox News, he was obsessed with Bob Dylan, he dated Joan Baez, he resisted early surgery for pancreatic cancer, he was inspired by a Cusinart food processer, he was inspired by a trip to a jelly bean factory, he advised Bill Clinton to tell the country about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, he thought John Mayer was "out of control,' he even consulted a psychic.

EPA to regulate disposal of fracking wastewater (AP)

ALLENTOWN, Pa. ? Federal environmental regulators signaled Thursday they want to increase oversight of the natural gas extraction industry, announcing they will develop national standards for the disposal of polluted wastewaters generated by a drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking.

Energy companies have dramatically expanded the use of fracking in recent years, injecting millions of gallons of water, sand and chemical additives to unlock gas in deep shale formations in Pennsylvania, Texas and other states. Its prevalence has raised concerns about the potential impact on water quality and quantity.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced that it will draft standards for fracking wastewater ? the briny, chemical-laced water that comes back out of the well ? that drillers would have to meet before sending it to treatment plants. The industry in recent months has been recycling much of the wastewater or injecting it deep underground, but some of it is sent to plants that are ill-equipped to remove the contaminants.

The new standards would also apply to wastewater produced by coalbed methane drilling, the agency said.

"We can protect the health of American families and communities at the same time we ensure access to all of the important resources that make up our energy economy. The American people expect and deserve nothing less," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson.

EPA has largely left it to the states to regulate fracking operations, and environmental groups cheered Thursday's announcement as a long-overdue first step. The agency is also in the midst of a national study of whether fracking has polluted groundwater and drinking water and its potential future impacts.

"The nation is in the midst of a fracking-fueled gas rush which is generating toxic wastewater faster than treatment plants can handle it," Earthjustice attorney Deborah Goldberg said. "The EPA's proposal is a common sense solution for this growing public health problem and will help keep poisons out of our rivers, streams, and drinking water."

Industry groups said wastewater disposal is already regulated by the states, with one criticizing the EPA for overreach.

"Pennsylvania's natural gas developers, as well as its regulators and service companies, are far ahead of EPA's review of wastewater treatment standards for shale gas," said Lou D'Amico of Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association.

Drilling companies began flocking to Pennsylvania several years ago to exploit the Marcellus Shale formation, the nation's largest-known reservoir of natural gas.

While drillers have expanded their efforts to recyle fracking wastewater, the administration of Gov. Tom Corbett asked them earlier this year to stop sending millions of barrels of salty, polluted wastewater to treatment plants that only partially remove the contaminants before discharging the water into rivers.

Social Security pay rises; Medicare costs do too

??The good news: Social Security recipients are getting their first cost-of-living raise, 3.6 percent, since 2009. The bad news: Rising Medicare premiums will eat into that increase for many, and could erase it entirely for a small percentage.

EBay CEO lifts PayPal mobile payment forecast (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? eBay Inc Chief Executive John Donahoe increased a key forecast for the company's PayPal payments business during an Internet industry conference on Monday.

Donahoe said total payment volume, or TPV, transmitted by mobile devices through PayPal's system will be more than $3.5 billion in 2011, during a discussion on stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.

The CEO's previous forecast was for $3 billion in mobile TPV at PayPal this year.

EBay is making a big push into mobile commerce, through smartphone apps like Red Laser, which lets shoppers scan bar codes to check prices online and at other retailers nearby.

PayPal is trying to transform itself from an online payments business into a mobile payments service that works in the offline world too.

Investors are watching for signs of progress in these areas because they increase the size of eBay's potential market hugely.

Last week, Donahoe said eBay's main Marketplaces business will process almost $5 billion of gross merchandise volume via mobile devices this year. That was up from a previous estimate of roughly $4 billion.

Feeding the masses, fueling a movement

Seventy-year-old Phyllis Coelho plunged her blue gloved hands into a plastic sink of gray soapy water and spent an afternoon last week cheerfully washing dishes "to support the revolution." The retired social worker had traveled from Belfast, Maine, the day before with her 78-year-old friend and fellow dishwasher, Jane Sanford.

They headed directly to the protest at Zuccotti Park because, they said, it was time to "show up."

At a table behind her, Nan Terrie, an 18-year-old law student from Orlando, Fla., was furiously chopping carrots and onions even as she juggled cell phone calls from people wanting to donate food, and handed hastily scribbled "to do" lists for other volunteers. Anj Ferrara, a 24-year-old artist, was tearing open some of the 40 boxed pizzas that had just arrived. And Tom Hintze, a 24-year-old bike tour guide, was trying to figure out the logistics of getting a truck and driver to pick up massive trays of pulled pork that someone wanted to send from Brooklyn.

The makeshift "kitchen" in the center of the park is the ever-evolving heart of the Occupy Wall Street encampment, managing to feed thousands daily even as it scrambles to figure out how to deal with an endless flow of donations.

But the people who work there ? and those they serve ? say it is much more, imbuing it with the same fervor that has marked the protests from the beginning.

"Revolution is fueled by eggplant parmigiana!" cried David Everitt-Carlson, smacking his lips and cleaning his plate after dinner. Sitting cross-legged in a cardboard box daubed with the words "I think outside the box" the unemployed 55-year-old said that, after months of homelessness, he had never eaten better.

Bagels and eggs for breakfast; pizza and burritos for lunch; fresh salads, organic vegetables and casseroles, pasta or barbecue chicken for dinner. Endless helpings ? all fresh, all free. And all served amid the deafening din of protest: masks and marchers, drums circles and dancers, chanters gripping signs exploding with rage at corporate gluttony, all surrounded by barricades and a phalanx of police officers.

"There is so much ingenuity and innovation right here in this kitchen that is so lacking in so many other areas of the country," said Sam Tresler, a 32-year-old consultant from Brooklyn as he dropped off a pot of mashed potatoes he had cooked that morning. "It's inspiring."

The kitchen has no on-site oven or refrigerator or stove, just fold-up tables, tarps, racks of food and tanks of water.

Truckloads of fresh fruit and vegetables arrive daily from organic farms in upstate New York and Vermont and Massachusetts, steaming containers of chicken and rice, burritos and lasagna are sent from restaurants all over the city, tubs of Ben and Jerry's chocolate and cookie dough ice cream arrived one sunny morning (and was scooped by the company's chairman of the board, Jeff Furman), and there is a seemingly never-ending delivery of pizza pies, ordered by phone from supporters all over the world.

'Pure and inspirational'
In the general spirit of the protest, the kitchen has no appointed leaders, just what volunteers jokingly refer to as an "organic hierarchy," meaning those that have been around the longest make the key decisions and assign the daily tasks. Newcomers ? and they have come from Haiti and Columbia and Japan as well as from all over America ? are generally put on clean-up duty. Others monitor the compost pack and environmental water filtration system.

There is a receiving table for locals who show up with bags of corn or a homegrown eggplant or a bush of basil. At another table a volunteer jots down the names of people who offer their home kitchens for protesters to cook and clean in.

"What you see in this kitchen is pure and inspirational and filled with great hope that we are moving towards something better," says Hintze, who generally makes a living hosting bike tours around the country. But he says he wouldn't be anywhere else. "We needed a reality check and the Arab Spring gave us one. This is where I'm meant to be."

As he is speaking an 80-year-old Jamaican woman who is visiting her daughter in Queens walks up, gives him a great big hug, and gleefully stuffs a single $100 bill into the plastic donations container. She doesn't want to be named, she says, because she intends to do the same next week and "I don't want people to think I'm rich."

Later another woman silently drops an envelope containing $1,000. Other donations have come from organized groups. The Corrections Officers' Benevolent Association of New York City donated food to feed approximately 800 people. And the United Federation of Teachers donated a huge storage space on Broadway, about seven blocks away, where the hundreds of UPS boxes arriving every day ? filled with canned food, and sleeping bags and blankets ? are sorted and stored.

But from the kitchen perspective, the most crucial donation happened a few days ago, when the Rev. Leopoldo Carl of Overcoming Love Ministries in Brooklyn wandered into the park and offered the use of his soup kitchen ? a state-of-the-art commercial operation capable of cooking for more than 1,500. The church, he said, had plenty of cold storage too.

"My congregation wants to help," he boomed. "And many of them are homeless."

Volunteer Heather Squire was incredulous. She had spent the past week desperately searching for such a space, so that the protesters could store fresh produce for the winter and move away from the daily trips to home kitchens that are simply not equipped to cook in volume. She had even talked with a real estate agent about renting a commercial facility ? a sore point among some protesters who would rather spend donated money on food.

"I'm an atheist," Squire says. "But there is something mystical happening here."

The 31-year-old sociology graduate from New Jersey works in restaurants because she has been unable to find a permanent job. She joined the movement on Oct. 1, the day of the march on the Brooklyn Bridge and was one of 700 arrested that day. It was "chilling" being behind bars for hours, Spire said, but it solidified her resolve to stay with the protesters. And so, the next day, she found herself washing dishes in a very different kind of kitchen.

Amy Hamburger, 29, had been backpacking in Kentucky a short time before the protest began, but came home to Queens to spend time with her ailing father. A friend encouraged her to go to the first protest and though she had never considered herself an activist, something compelled her to stay.

'Amazing synchronicity'
"It just feels like this is exactly where I am meant to be," said an exhausted looking Hamburger one evening last week, red-eyed from working at the kitchen for nearly 48 hours. By now, she's getting used to lack of sleep. She has been volunteering since the very beginning, when protesters were surviving on peanut butter sandwiches and pizza. For Hamburger, the evolution of the kitchen has been nothing short of a miracle.

"There is this amazing synchronicity," she said. "Every time we really need something, it just seems to appear."

"There's a gestalt here," said Deborah Mulligan a 57-year-old attorney from Madison, Wis., who, having slept on the marble floors of Wisconsin's State Capitol during the union protests last winter, felt an obligation to join the protesters in New York. "When you eat together and break bread together, you talk and you learn and you get even more informed and inspired," she said.

Shane Stoops, who has also been in the kitchen since the beginning, has a more personal take. The self-described "Renaissance man" from Washington state says he has always been a bit "radical" and always had a testy relationship with his dad, a shipyard pipefitter.

"For the first time in his life, my father told me he was proud of me for standing up for something I believe in," said Stoops, 23. "Feeding people is a beautiful thing, but so was hearing those words."
