5 gov?t troops killed by blast in northern Syria - Indiatalkies.com

Damascus, June 11 (Xinhua-ANI): Five government troops were killed Monday by the explosion of a roadside bomb in Syria?s northern province of Idlib, pro-government Sham FM radio reported.

An army captain was among the killed, said the report, adding that an army checkpoint near Kafr Najed bridge also came under fire by armed men with reports of injuries among civilians.

In another incident, two improvised explosive devices went off at Masaken Barzeh neighborhood in the capital Damascus, killing one person and injuring another.

The first explosive was planted under a car, said the report, adding that the driver and the car were totally burnt.

The other explosive went off near a high school, hitting a university student and causing his legs to be amputated.

In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, authorities intercepted a car rigged with 700 kgs of explosives, witnesses told Xinhua.

The 15-month-old unrest in Syria has become more militarized as clashes between government forces and armed rebels have hit a new high recently, taking place in several areas in the heart of Damascus. (Xinhua-ANI)

Guests At Matthew McConaughey's Wedding Played Lawn Games

published: 2012-06-10 20:54:25

More details from Matthew McConaughey?s wedding are emerging, and each makes this past weekend?s ceremony sound just a bit more awesome. The bride and groom invited their friends and family to stay in luxury, air conditioned tents in the backyard of the family home. Each came with its own patio and doormat, and apparently, there were games everywhere.

According to People, the invited sipped on beers, relaxed in hammocks and played bags and ring toss in their bare feet during the lazy Saturday lead up to the formal vow exchanges. Hours later when the big moment finally arrived, McConaughey reportedly changed into a Dolce & Gabbana tuxeo, while his soon-to-be wife Camila flaunted a custom Brazilian wedding dress.

Austin, Texas might not be known for its Hollywood luxury, but the festivities were reportedly a perfect blend between Texas fun and California glitz. There are few activities more enjoyable than playing bags with a drink and a cocky expression on your face, but watching close friends finally say their I-Dos might be one of them. Bravo to this weekend for offering a lucky few dozen both.

Matthew and Camila began dating five years ago and have been joined at the hip ever since. They have two children together and now, a renewed commitment to make it last forever. Pop Blend sends out its warmest well-wishes to the couple and shoots a pleasant but envious glare at the lucky souls who got to witness the activities first hand.

BEIJING (AP) ? China will launch three astronauts this month to dock with an orbiting experimental module, and the crew might include its first female space traveler, a government news agency said Saturday.

A rocket carrying the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft was moved to a launch pad in China's desert northwest on Saturday for the mid-June flight, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing an space program spokesman.

The three-member crew will dock with and live in the Tiangong 1 orbital module launched last year, Xinhua said. The government has not said how long the mission will last.

Xinhua cited Niu Hongguang, deputy commander in chief of the manned space program, as saying the crew "might include female astronauts."

The government said in 2010 that two female air force pilots had joined the astronaut program but has disclosed no other details.

China's space program has made steady progress since a 2003 launch that made it only the third nation to put a man in space on its own. Two more manned missions have followed, one including a space walk.

China completed its first space rendezvous in November when the unmanned Shenzhou 8 docked with the Tiangong 1 by remote control. Tiangong 1 was launched on Sept. 29.

Over the next few days, scientists will test the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, the Long March 2F rocket and ground systems, Xinhua said, citing the spokesman.

During the flight, one crew member will remain aboard the Shenzhou 9 "as a precautionary measure in case of emergency" while the others enter Tiangong 1, Xinhua said.

China has scheduled two space docking missions for this year and plans to complete a manned space station around 2020 to replace Tiangong 1. At about 60 tons, the Chinese station will be considerably smaller than the 16-nation International Space Station.

Beijing launched its independent space station program after being turned away from the International Space Station, largely due to U.S. objections. Washington is wary of the Chinese program's military links and of sharing technology with an economic and political rival.

Spain goes from boom to bailout in a decade

(AP) ? Spain's economic fortunes have gone from boom to deep financial crisis over the past decade. Here are the main developments:

BIRTH OF THE EURO

?Spain is one of 12 countries that joined the single European currency in 1999. Following the euro's launch in 2002, the euro is now shared by 17 countries. Spain's membership in this powerful bloc gave it access to lower interest rate loans than it would have got on its own.

PROPERTY GOLDRUSH

?Cheap money triggered a real estate boom as property developers and families borrowed heavily. This fueled an unprecedented economic expansion known as the "Spanish fiesta". The country's then-muscular economy, the fourth-largest in the eurozone, rode out the 2008 financial crisis as its main lenders ? and savings banks called cajas ? were widely viewed by investors as sound.

FROM BOOM TO BUST

?Unemployment started rising. The jobless rate, which stood at 8.3 percent in 2007, jumped to 18 percent in 2009. It is now almost 25 percent. The huge numbers of unsold properties in Spain caused prices to plummet.

CAUGHT UP IN EUROZONE'S DEBT CRISIS

?As the eurozone's debt crisis worsened with problems in Greece, Ireland and Portugal, so Spain's problems became more acute. By 2009, the financial sector was sitting on ?445 billion ($553.49 billion) worth of property-related loans. Regional governments also turned out to be deep in debt as income linked to new construction licenses and taxes dried up.

ZAPATERO ACTS

?In 2010, Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero introduced controversial hikes in the retirement age, from 65 to 67, and in sales taxes to get a handle on the size of government debt and appease markets. Zapatero's measures failed to halt the country's slide into recession and he was forced to call early elections in 2011.

CHANGE AT THE TOP

?The conservative Popular Party, led by Mariano Rajoy, took office in December 2011. Rajoy moved quickly on reforms and austerity measures, triggering massive demonstrations by people worried about their future. Many protesters were young ? the jobless rate for those between 16 and 24 has reached 52 percent.

DRAGGED ALONG BY THE TIDE

?Rajoy has had to nationalize eight lenders facing bankruptcy as Spain fell into a double-dip recession. But investors and markets have continued to focus on the financial sector's ?180 billion in toxic real estate assets and the financial health of the wider eurozone. This has sent Spain's borrowing costs on the international debt markets to worryingly high levels.

EATING YOUR WORDS

? Rajoy and his team have been adamant that the Spanish banking sector would not need a bailout. On May 28, he said: "There will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector." On Saturday, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Spain will ask for a bailout after European finance ministers authorized a rescue amount of up to ?100 billion ($125 billion). Asked why Rajoy didn't make the announcement, de Guindos replied that he did because he is the representative to the European Union's group of finance ministers. De Guindos dodged a question on whether Rajoy still planned to head to Poland on Sunday to see Spain take on Italy in the Euro 2012 football competition. But Rajoy's Poland trip had been removed from his official agenda on his presidential website.

(AP) ? U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he hopes to get the Roger Clemens perjury trial to the jury by Tuesday, although that could prove overly optimistic given the pace of the trial so far.

The defense plans to wrap up its case Monday morning, and the government will call rebuttal witnesses, which could take about a half day. Walton said he expects to get to closing arguments Tuesday and then send the case to jurors.

On Friday, which concluded the eighth week of the trial, Clemens' wife, Debbie, testified that Roger Clemens was not present when she received a shot of human growth hormone from his strength coach. That contradicted a portion of the testimony from the coach, Brian McNamee, who is the former pitching star's chief accuser in the case.

McNamee testified last month that not only was Clemens present, he had summoned McNamee to the couple's master bathroom in Houston to give Debbie Clemens the drug.

McNamee said she looked at her husband and said, "I can't believe you're going to let him do this to me," and Roger Clemens responded, "He injects me. Why can't he inject you?"

McNamee is the only person to give firsthand testimony that Roger Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs during his baseball career.

On cross-examination by the prosecution, Debbie Clemens said of her husband's view of HGH, "I don't think he thought it was bad." She added, "It wasn't like doing heroin."

Clemens is charged with lying to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Among more than a dozen false statements he's alleged to have made are that he never used HGH and that McNamee injected his wife without Roger Clemens' prior knowledge or approval.

Friday's session at times felt like an episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," as the jury was shown pictures of the palatial master bedroom in Clemens' home and a bathroom that Debbie Clemens said was as big as a kitchen. She said the property has seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, counting the pool house.

Walton, who allows jurors to ask questions that he deems appropriate, relayed one from a juror who wanted to know if Debbie Clemens would take HGH now.

"I might. I don't yet. I don't know that I'm old enough yet, but this is aging me," she replied with a laugh.

Debbie Clemens never cracked on the stand, but her tone occasionally got testy. At one point, she sighed deeply, like someone who's having a bad day.

Before defense lawyer Rusty Hardin began his questioning, he said, "It's almost over."

"Praise God," she replied.

UN says 7 peacekeepers killed in Ivory Coast

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Armed men ambushed and killed seven U.N. peacekeepers trying to protect villagers in Ivory Coast on Friday and more than 40 of their colleagues who stayed to guard from more attacks remain in danger, the United Nations said.

Hundreds of villagers were fleeing the area near the Liberian border, and U.N. officials said others may have been killed or injured. Authorities have been unable to confirm any additional casualties because of the remoteness of the area near the Liberian border.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms," saying he was "saddened and outraged" about the deaths of the peacekeepers, all from Niger. He urged the government of Ivory Coast to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Later on Friday, the U.N. Security Council released a press statement condemning the attack.

Ivory Coast's deputy defense minister Paul Koffi Koffi said government forces, along with Liberian and U.N. forces, will launch an operation on June 15 to find the men responsible. He said they were "militia men or mercenaries."

Koffi Koffi said they could not respond sooner because it would take time to gather equipment and prepare the forces.

An Ivorian Cabinet official who was briefed on the matter said President Alasanne Ouattara requested helicopter gunships from the U.N. and expected them to arrive by Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Bert Koenders, the U.N. envoy to the west African nation, said the peacekeepers were part of a patrol south of the town of Tai, an area the U.N. mission recently reinforced because of threats of attacks against the civilian population. The ambush involved a large group of armed men, a U.N. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

"Their colleagues are still in danger," Ban told reporters. "Even tonight, after the attack, more than 40 peacekeepers remain with the villagers in this remote region to protect them from this armed group."

The mayor of Tai, Desire Gnonkonte, told AP that hundreds of villagers were fleeing the area.

"We are moving in reinforcements as soon as we have daylight," said Kieran Dwyer, the spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping department.

Josephine Guerrero, a spokeswoman for the U.N.'s Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said it was the biggest attack on peacekeepers in recent years.

Sylvie van den Wildenberg, acting spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Ivory Coast, called it "the first attack of its kind" against U.N. peacekeepers in the country.

She said several vehicles were on a reconnaissance patrol near the village of Para on the southern axis of Tai to follow up on "rumors of movement of armed people in the area and threats on the security of civilians."

"There were several vehicles on the patrol and the leading vehicles were strongly hit," van den Wildenberg said. "The area is densely forested and very tough terrain."

Once a stable nation, the world's largest cocoa producer was split into a rebel-controlled north and government-controlled south after an attempted coup sparked civil war in 2002. A peace deal in March 2007 brought key rebel leaders into the administration and offered hope for a single government after years of foundering accords and disarmament plans.

But the country headed to the brink of civil war after a presidential runoff in early 2011 when then-president Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede defeat after losing to Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of the election. Gbagbo was arrested with the help of U.N. and French forces in April 2011, and is now facing charges of war crimes at The Hague. Ouattara was sworn in as president soon after.

Following Gbagbo's arrest, many of the mercenaries and militiamen who fought for him fled across the porous border into Liberia's forests, or clandestinely, into its refugee camps.

Western Ivory Coast has remained particularly unstable, and Human Rights Watch said earlier this week that armed groups in Liberia who supported Gbagbo have killed at least 40 civilians in cross-border raids into Ivory Coast since July. The deaths have all been near Tai, Human Rights Watch said.

"In the four cross-border attacks since June 2011, the motivation appears to have been both political vengeance and related to land conflict - issues that overlap in Ivory Coast's volatile west. Those killed or whose houses were burned predominantly belong to ethnic groups that largely voted for president Ouattara," the group said in its report.

Matt Wells, West Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, told AP that the organization hasn't confirmed details of the attack but "pro-Gbagbo militants have conducted repeated raids from Liberia into this region of Ivory Coast."

"The Gbagbo camp often resorted to inciting rhetoric against U.N. personnel during the Ivorian crisis, though today's deadly attack is the first of its kind during the recent Ivorian crisis," Wells said

"Liberian and Ivorian authorities need to quickly work together to bring to account those involved in this heinous act," he said.

The United Nations has had a peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast since 2004.

At the end of April, the U.N. said there were about 9,400 peacekeeping troops, 200 military observers and 1,350 international police in the mission along with civilian staff. Over 40 countries are contributing military personnel.

Koenders said the U.N. mission "will take all necessary measures following this grave violation of international law."

SUV Drives Into D.C. Office Building, Driver May Have Been Doused In Gasoline, Reports Say (UPDATED)

WASHINGTON -- Police in the nation's capital, along with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, are investigating an incident where a SUV may have been intentionally driven into a downtown office building Friday night.

WRC-TV/NBC 4 reports:

Sources told News4's Jackie Bensen that the interior of the SUV as well as the driver had been deliberately doused with gasoline.

The FBI and a bomb squad went to the scene.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray was also on the scene, Bensen tweeted.

The building in question, according to Bensen, is 1050 Connecticut Ave. NW, a large office block called Washington Square that stretches the length of L Street NW between Connecticut Avenue and 18th Street NW.

The street-level retail includes a Men's Wearhouse, Victoria's Secret, Verizon Wireless, The Art of Shaving and J.R. Cigars. Morton's Steakhouse occupies a second-floor space fronting Connecticut Avenue. The Arent Fox law firm is one of the building's tenants.

Bensen reported during WRC-TV's 11 p.m. newscast that around 7:45 p.m., an SUV drove in between steel bollards that line the sidewalk outside the Washington Square lobby and ended up inside the building.

WJLA-TV/ABC7 reported that the SUV hit an ATM and that the driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The news station reported that Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said that the Joint Terrorism Task Force was asked to investigate the situation "out of abundance of caution" because it appears the SUV was driven intentionally into the building.

WTOP-FM's Michelle Basch indicates that police believe the SUV had been stolen and that the gas inside the vehicle was from a canister "simply been left there by the car's owner."

One of the Farragut North Metrorail station's entrances at L Street NW is closed, but according to a D.C. Alert sent out around 8:45 p.m., Red Line operations were not impacted. Metro reports that other entrances remain open.

Streets adjacent to the office building were closed but were expected to reopen around midnight.

brazilian, jiujitsu, martial art, techn - Your Personal Brazilian JiuJitsu ...

A combination of Japanese Martial Arts and Kodokan judo, Brazilian jiujitsu was brought into limelight in 1990 when Royce Gracie, a Brazilian jiujitsu expert won the first, second and forth Ultimate Fighting Championships. Royce Gracie-s winnings have led to many MMA fighters to start training this martial art and it has become the key to other fighters- winnings as well.

This martial art involves many ground fighting techniques. It also includes submission holds, such as joint-locks and chokeholds. This type of jiujitsu actually allows smaller and weaker opponents to hold their own against bigger and stronger opponents, and even help them actually win the match through moves and techniques that capitalize on leverage. When it comes to self-defense techniques in martial arts, Brazilian jiujitsu comes highly recommended.

There are two trainings involved: sparring and alive drilling play. Sparring is also known as rolling and it differs from alive drilling play in the fact that the opponents are bound by rules. These rules make sure there are lesser injuries. Alive drilling play is more spontaneous and dynamic, not really scripted or governed by rules. This martial art normally ends up with fighters pinning their opponents to the ground in order to defeat them. The opponent could be tackled to the ground by wrapping one-s legs around him - this is known as the guard position. It is very effective in limiting the opponent into making any counter moves or counter attacks. Unlike judo, Brazilian jiujitsu fight takes place mostly on the ground and it includes a lot of grappling, as this offsets the power and strength of the stronger fighter and gives the chance to the weaker fighters.

Fighters are ranked in Brazilian jiujitsu with the use of belts - quite similar to judo, really - with white as the lowest rank and red as the highest. In between, there-s the blue, purple, brown, black, and black-and-red belts. Reaching the red belt will take one lots of years, practice and a ton of discipline on the part of the martial art practitioner. For example, if someone started training this martial art at the age of 19, he/she can receive the red belt when they are 67 years old the earliest. Of course, that means all the intervening years have to be spent training in the art. Kids- ranking are slightly different, though, because they start with white, then grey, yellow, orange, and green, the highest ranking.

Aside from being a martial art, Brazilian jiujitsu is also a sport. People look at this martial art as a way or means to not only harness one-s body but also build up one-s character. It is regarded as a way of life or Do and thus belongs to a group of other martial arts, such as aikido, judo, karate, kendo and etc.

The uniform in Brazilian jiujitsu is called Gi, just like the judogi in judo. However, gi is tighter at the bottom of the trouser and jackets, so no extra fabric would obstruct any movement. Kimono is also another term used for the uniform.

Price is Right Unveils Brand New Game ... - Tv Food and Drink

The Price is Right introduced their newest pricing game on this morning?s show (Thanks to Alex and Buzzerblog for the tip).

?Doublecross? is a two-prize game. Contestants must slide ?highlight boxes? across a series of digits populating an X grid until the correct prices of both prizes are highlighted at the same time, while intersecting one another through a single, mutual digit.

Sound easy?

As is often the case with the debut of a new game, it didn?t go off quite as well as producers might have hoped. The only problem I really have with it is that the contestant is positioned directly in front of the X-grid while playing, and this blocks some of the available numbers from the camera, killing the home viewer?s chance to play along. And contestant Janice was rather tiny. What happens if a 6-foot two hundred pound linebacker from UCSB is called up from Contestant?s Row to play?

Check out the video below and decide for yourself. Do you want to see more DoubleCross on Price?

India:Bt technology helps India turn into net exporter of cotton

The introduction of Bt cotton technology in India has helped the country increase its cotton production and turn into a net exporter of the cash-rich crop from being a net importer of the same, according to a field study report.

The report titled ?Socio-economic impact assessment of Bt cotton in India? states that the use of hybrid Bt cotton seeds has increased cotton production in the country by more than 9 percent.

Based on the field study undertaken in nine-cotton growing states of India, namely Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, the report states that the area under cotton cultivation has grown by 4.91 percent during the past decade.

The study was jointly conducted by a farmers? organization ? Bharat Krishak Samaj ? and a research institute ? Council for Social Development.

The report concludes that the use of Bt cotton seeds, along with better prices and lower pesticide use, has helped cotton growers to increase their productivity, and in turn, bag higher returns.

Mr. Ajay Jakhar, Chairman of Bharat Krishak Samaj, said the report highlights that India?s cotton exports have increased by over 75 percent during 2002-2009 period owing to the use of Bt cotton seeds.

He said the use of Bt cotton has transformed India from a net importer of the crop to a net exporter of the crop.

He said some incidents of farmer suicides were due to factors like fluctuating cotton prices, lack of irrigation facilities and non-availability of timely credit, and not due to the use of hybrid cotton seeds.

Mr. T Haque of Council for Social Development said the study also found that the use of Bt cotton has resulted in reduced expenses on pesticides over the years.
