Iconia Tab A200 and A700 slates head to CES, make a pitstop in Russia

Acer already spilled the beans on its Iconia Tab A200, a 10.1-inch slab powered by NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, but whatever happened to that Tegra 3 touting A700? It went to Russia, of course. According to NoMobile.ru, the A200's slimmer, but more powerful brother will debut at CES 2012 next month. The Ruskie site pegs the tablet's 1920 x 1200 resolution screen at 10.1-inches, which is bordered by SIM and micro-USB slots, a dedicated rotation lock switch, the standard volume rockers, an audio jack and a micro-HDMI port. On its rear they found a textured back garnished with a five megapixel camera sporting a built-in flash -- the whole unit weights 650 grams (1.43 pounds) and boasts a ten hour battery life. When can we see it? At CES, says NoMobile.ru, or in stores if you're willing to wait until March. We'll poke around Acer's offerings next month and let you know what we find. Can't wait? Follow the source link below for a few more pictures.

Red meat lovers have more kidney cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? People who eat lots of red meat may have a higher risk of some types of kidney cancer, suggests a large U.S. study.

Researchers found that middle-aged adults who ate the most red meat were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer than those who ate the least. A higher intake of chemicals found in grilled or barbecued meat was also linked to increased risk of the disease, they reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"Red meat is an important source for iron (and) it has protein," said Dr. Mohammed El-Faramawi, an epidemiologist from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, who has studied diet and kidney cancer risks but wasn't involved in the new study.

"You should not stop eating red meat because there is an association between red meat and renal cancer," he told Reuters Health. Instead, eating a limited amount of meat while following dietary recommendations is a good idea, he said.

U.S. guidelines call for limiting high-fat foods including processed meat, and instead eating more lean meat and poultry, seafood and nuts.

Eating red meat in large amounts -- even if it doesn't necessarily lead to kidney cancer -- increases the risk of a host of health problems, such as plaque buildup in the arteries, El-Faramawi added.

Previous studies examining the link between red meat and kidney cancer arrived at mixed conclusions, according to Carrie Daniel, from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, and her colleagues.

To try to clear up that picture, they used data from a study of close to 500,000 U.S. adults age 50 and older, who were surveyed on their dietary habits, including meat consumption, and then followed for an average of nine years to track any new cancer diagnoses.

During that time, about 1,800 of them -- less than half a percent -- were diagnosed with kidney cancer.

On average, men in the study ate two or three ounces of red meat per day, compared to one or two ounces among women. Participants with the highest consumption of red meat -- about four ounces per day -- were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer than those who ate the smallest amount, less than one ounce per day.

That was after accounting for other aspects of diet and lifestyle that could have influenced cancer risks, such as age, race, fruit and vegetable consumption, smoking and drinking and other medical conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes.

When the researchers looked at the most common types of kidney cancers, they found that the association between red meat and cancer was stronger for so-called papillary cancers, but there was no effect for clear-cell kidney cancers.

People who ate the most well-done grilled and barbecued meat -- and therefore had the highest exposure to carcinogenic chemicals that come out of the cooking process -- also had an extra risk of kidney cancer compared to those who didn't cook much meat that way.

The study doesn't prove that eating red meat, or cooking it a certain way, causes kidney cancer. And, El-Faramawi pointed out, some people who eat lots of red meat won't develop cancer, while others that hardly eat any will.

Daniel and her colleagues said more research is needed to figure out why red meat may be linked to some types of kidney cancers but not others.

But for now, meat-related cooking chemicals "can be reduced by avoiding direct exposure of meat to an open flame or a hot metal surface, reducing the cooking time, and using a microwave oven to partially cook meat before exposing it to high temperatures," Daniel told Reuters Health in an email.

"Our findings," she concluded, "support the dietary recommendations for cancer prevention currently put forth by the American Cancer Society -- limit intake of red and processed meats and prepare meat by cooking methods such as baking and broiling."

Man Sued for Retaining Former Employer's Twitter Follower List

Posted on December 27, 2011 11:50 AM by Rob Williams

With the advent of social services like Facebook and Twitter, the idea of what's "owned" by either the service or the person has been often debated. When your former employer is behind the questioning, however, things can get really murky, really fast. Case in point: the experience of Noah Kravitz, former employee of Phonedog, a website focusing on mobile technology.

During his tenure with Phonedog, Noah amassed about 17,000 followers while representing the company. After he left the company, he changed his Twitter name to get rid of the Phonedog moniker (something I didn't even realize was possible), and retained those followers. Phonedog isn't too happy about this, as it believes?its resources went into attracting all these followers, and as such, the list belongs to it.

As Noah refused to give back the Twitter account, Phonedog has decided to sue him for $2.50 per user, for a total of $370,000. At the same time, Noah insinuates that Phonedog gave him permission to retain the list, as long as he talked about the company from time to time through his tweets.

As someone who runs a tech website similar to Phonedog, I can understand where the company is on this one, and am kind of on their side. If I had an employee working for me amassing boatloads of followers while on the clock, I'd want to retain that list after the employee has left, replacing his likeness with someone else that comes on board. It's just simple business, and much like a mailing list, you're not going to let someone up and walk out with it.

That said, if Phonedog didn't have it as a written signed rule somewhere that the list would have to be handed over after termination of employment, then it's a little hard to see a winning case here. And at that, $2.50 per user is a bit extreme, especially when you consider that the vast majority of Twitter followers don't ardently read what you have to say given they follow so many people / companies.

What are your thoughts on this?

Lady Gaga's ex-assistant sues her for $400K

Has Lady Gaga been keeping too tight of a hold on her meat-purse strings?

The pop superstar's former assistant claims she's owed nearly $400,000 in overtime pay after attending to Gaga's every need for four weeks in 2009 and then throughout 2010 and into March of this year.

Slideshow: Fashion gone Gaga (on this page)

So, just how much overtime does it take to keep the singer happy, according to Jennifer L. O'Neill's lawsuit?

The plaintiff claims she worked 7,168 hours of overtime during her period of employment, meaning she was basically on duty almost every hour of every day that she worked for the "Born This Way" artist. Her complaint states that she was paid $1,000 per week for her time in 2009 and then an annual salary of $75,000 for the rest.

But that's just base salary, according to the suit, and does not account for the time O'Neill spent attending to Gaga business "not only in her home, but also during her travels to her global concert tours, from city to city throughout the world, at locales including stadiums, private jets, fine hotel suites, yachts, ferries, trains and tour buses."

O'Neill "was always behind the scenes, and figuratively, if not literally, always at her side," the suit states.

"Jennifer O'Neill's lawsuit is completely without merit," a rep for Gaga tells E! News of the suit, filed Dec. 14 in U.S. District Court in New York.

The plaintiff is demanding she be paid at least $393,014, encompassing the allegedly unpaid overtime and fair compensation for working 10-hour days.

GOP campaign for Iowa caucus enters final week (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? An Iowa caucus campaign that has cycled through several Republican presidential front-runners entered its final week Monday, as unpredictable as the day conservatives began competing to emerge as Mitt Romney's chief rival.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, released a new television commercial for the state in which he cited a "moral imperative for America to stop spending more money than we take in. It's killing jobs," he said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry countered with an advertisement that said four of his rivals combined ? none of them Romney ? have served 63 years in Congress, "leaving us with debt, earmarks and bailouts."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has invested more time in Iowa than any other contender, was the only one in the state during the day.

That changes Tuesday, with bus tours planned by Perry, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, all eager to energize their existing supporters and attract new ones.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul arrives Wednesday. Recent polls suggest he is peaking as caucus day approaches, and in some surveys is tied with Romney or even ahead.

The result figures to be a short but intense stretch of campaigning through small towns and even smaller towns, the sort of one-on-one politicking that has largely vanished in the electronic age.

Failing that, it will pay tribute to the types cuisine that prosper in early 21st century America.

The Perry bus will belly up to Doughy Joey's in Waterloo and to the Fainting Goat in Waverly, an establishment whose website says "After 10 p.m., we are the type of place your mothers warned you about." Perry also will visit a vineyard and winery in Carroll.

Bachmann will make an early-winter stop at a Dairy Queen, as well as Pizza Ranch establishments in Harlan, Red Oak and Atlantic, three localities with a combined population of 17,282.

It's not all about the food, though.

Perry has a stop arranged at the Glenn Miller Museum in Clarinda, population 5,301, where the great bandleader was born.

The Texas governor also has a distinction that none of his rivals can boast, a town that shares his name. Thus, Perry will visit Perry.

There were signs of strategic shifts as candidates struggled to stand out in advance of the straw poll next week that inaugurates the round of primaries and caucuses that will pick a nominee to oppose President Barack Obama next fall.

Perry's new ad shows images of Gingrich, Paul, Santorum and Bachmann as it criticizes Congress and renews the governor's call for halving lawmakers' pay and time spent in Washington.

Despite the commercial's implication, Gingrich and Santorum were out of Congress when the multibillion-dollar financial bailouts of 2008 occurred. Paul and Bachmann voted against the legislation.

Still, the approach taken suggests the Texas governor is more concerned with outpacing Paul, Bachmann, Santorum and Gingrich on caucus night that he is in defeating Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor, making his second try for the White House, has a well-funded and well-organized campaign nationally and in Iowa, as well as allies who are spending heavily on television advertisements through an independent organization known as a super PAC.

While others have periodically risen to challenge him, Romney has kept his support from seriously eroding in the polls, consistently remaining near the top.

A victory in Iowa does not necessarily translate into the Republican presidential nomination. Yet history suggests that contenders who finish farthest behind next week will quickly drop out, underscoring the significance of the struggle to emerge as Romney's chief rival.

The most recent presidential hopeful to surge and then falter is Gingrich. The former House speaker's campaign imploded last summer and still shows the after-effects: a shortage of funds to counter attack ads in Iowa, and failure to qualify for the primary in Virginia in March.

After insisting he would run a purely positive campaign, Gingrich let it be known he was about to attack Romney on one of his presumed areas of strength, his economic proposals.

R.C. Hammond, a spokesman for Gingrich, said the candidate would make the case that Romney has advanced "very timid ideas that will do little to get people back to work."

Gingrich favors an end to taxes on investment income and dividends, while Romney wants to end them only for individuals with incomes of $200,000 or less.

Gingrich also has proposed an optional 15 percent flat tax on income. Under the plan, taxpayers could stay in the current system, which has a top tax rate of 35 percent on taxable income above $379,150, or switch to the new flat rate, which would apply to income at all levels.

Romney favors retaining the current graduated income tax system, with lower rates than currently exist.

Gingrich is at least the fourth front-runner to falter since the campaign began in earnest in Iowa earlier this year.

Bachmann, who won a straw poll at the Iowa State Fair last summer, was briefly atop polls in the state. So, too Herman Cain, who subsequently suspended his campaign after a woman claimed they had a long-term extramarital affair.

Santorum has yet to experience the type of sudden surge that others in the race enjoyed, but has doggedly campaigned in all 99 of the state's counties in hopes of rallying social conservatives to his side.

Winter Surfing at Sunset

A poem.

December 26, 2011

Winter surfing at sunset

Off the California coast the golden sun is cold
?riding the lip of the earth. The wind drops
?to just a whisper of tomorrow's storm,
?in the lavendered east a twist of new moon hangs.
?A shadow slips out of the sun
?and I catch it. Standing as if on a rollicking train,
?I make a run for the shore
?slicing the wave in half.
?Peeling the wet suit?off
?it rolls down my body in shivering lurches
?gathering like black bark about my feet,
?my limbs white as a birch.
?As I dry off in the hopping cold
?watching the sea turn pewter,
?dolphins rise and fall, heading south.

What to know about Texas Poker

Posted On Saturday, December 24th, 2011 By admin

Nowadays, both young and middle aged people find a pleasure in spending their free time playing card games. One of the most widely used card games, played online and live in the casinos, is the Texas Poker. Though the apparition of Holdem Poker continues to be unknown, it?s considered to have begun in the early 1900?s somewhere in Texas. The Poker Holdem is part of the horse tournaments of card games regarding poker, being the ?H? game, also the first round of the tourney. Other card games, related to poker as well, are the omaha, razz, sever card stud and eight or better.

Texas Poker is mainly played online, by downloading a poker platform and setting it up into the pc. If you possess some free time, you can just log into your account and start betting. It?s way a lot better than starting a casino and spending $ 100 just to get access to a table. Online Holdem Poker also has freeroll tournaments where you can register without making a deposit first. So you can win actual money without investing a single penny. It?s considered to be a game of luck, but there has been developed a few strategies to assist you to win constant hands at a virtual table. There are many popular sites that constantly offer promotions and bonuses for their customers and other benefits for example free entrance to the most significant world ? wide live tournaments.

By downloading a Poker Holdem software, you are able to choose to play for pleasure with virtual money, or you are able to go for the real cash tables. You can also play the game with the multi ? table feature, or go at a single table and focus on gathering all the chips from the other players. All the money is transformed into chips when you enter a table, for they are the used items when betting. As a main idea, Texas Poker is used two cards dealt to every player from a table and then the dealer places three cards in the middle, representing the flop. In the end the bets are placed, another card in the middle is turned faced up, representing the turn. The participants placed their bets again, consisting in one of the following actions: check, fold, raise, call, re-raise. The last card turned in the middle of the table is called the river and most of the time that it is the decisive one when it comes to winning the pot or loosing all the betting chips.

Holdem Poker is actually very easy to learn. You?ve to understand that the two cards you?ve connect a lot with the flop and form different pairs. The winner is the person having one of the mentioned combinations of card, stated in the exact order: high card, one pair, two pairs, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush and royal flush. It?s very hard to obtain a royal flush in Poker Holdem, for you have to have the highest possible cards, all of the same color. Another think good to learn about poker, whether you listen to it live or online, is the proven fact that you can adopt a hostile style, by betting before the flop is shown and on the flop, turn and river. By doing this, other players are intimidated and they fold, though they?ve good cards, providing you with the possibility to take the chips from the pot. There is no need to have good cards in you hand, for you can make a good bluff, if you?re proficient at hiding your emotions.

All in all, poker is a fine way of expending free time and winning some pocket money. Others have made a living with the incomes gained from poker and farmville quickly became their fulltime job. On the internet, they are also called the VIP players, for they?re constantly playing their favorite game.
