NVIDIA GTX Titan review roundup: the fastest single-GPU card ever tested

NVIDIA GTX Titan review roundup the fastest singleGPU card ever tested

Looking to cut to the chase? Those yearning for the fastest single-GPU powered graphics card ever tested need look no further... for the moment, anyway. NVIDIA's beastly GTX Titan has been making the rounds on test benches across the world, and while demo titles and stress factors varied somewhat, the overall conclusion seems pretty unanimous. The folks at Hot Hardware proclaimed: "In every benchmark or game we threw at it, regardless of resolution, the GeForce GTX Titan clearly outpaced the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and the GeForce GTX 680, sometimes by margins over 50 percent." Meanwhile, the crew at AnandTech stated: "It's simply in a league of its own right now, reaching levels of performance no other single-GPU card can touch." Oh, and it can totally play Crysis 3. For those needing any additional convincing, you'll find a plethora of links below; in other news, you still need a grand to buy one. Huzzah!

Obama speaks on the perils of cuts

As the country inches closer to the March 1 sequester deadline, President Barack Obama on Tuesday travels to Newport News, Va., to illustrate what he and the administration believe will be the devastating economic impacts of the spending cuts.

Obama will use Newport News Shipbuilding, which supplies materials to all 50 states, to press his case for Republicans to compromise on tax increases for the wealthiest Americans and some corporations, and pass a budget to avoid the sequester?across-the-board cuts set to occur in the absence of a budget.

Newport News is a place "where workers will sit idle when they should be repairing ships, and a carrier sits idle when it should be deploying to the Persian Gulf," Obama told governors gathered at the White House on Monday for the National Governors Association annual meeting.

Tuesday's trip is the latest effort by the White House to argue against the sequester. Some Republicans have indicated they would allow it to go into effect should Congress fail to agree on a federal budget that they feel adequately reduces spending and the deficit.

In addition to Obama's speech on Monday to the nation's governors?during which he implored them to urge their congressional delegations to find a budget compromise?the sequester was tackled by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during Monday's White House briefing. There, she warned that lines for customs and border crossings will significantly increase and trade will slow down due to spending cuts necessitated by the sequester.

The president is set to speak in Virginia at 1:05 p.m. ET.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) ? C.J. Harris scored 23 points and Wake Forest beat No. 2 Miami 80-65 on Saturday to snap the Hurricanes? 14-game winning streak.

Codi Miler-McIntyre added 15 points while Harris was 5 for 5 from 3-point range to lead the Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9 Atlantic Coast Conference).

They shot 54 percent, led by double figures for the entire second half and reeled off 12 straight points to pull away for their biggest victory under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

Durand Scott had all 17 of his points in the second half for the Hurricanes (22-4, 13-1), the last of the schools in the six BCS conferences to get its first league loss.

Shane Larkin added 13 points, Trey McKinney Jones had 11 and Kenny Kadji finished with 10, but Miami was outrebounded 36-35 by the younger, smaller Demon Deacons.

???
No. 3 GONZAGA 81, SAN DIEGO 50

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) ? Kevin Pangos scored 18 points for Gonzaga, which is in position to rise to second in the AP poll after No. 2 Miami was upset by Wake Forest.

Kelly Olynyk added 14 points and nine rebounds for Gonzaga (27-2, 14-0 West Coast Conference), which clinched at least a tie for the WCC regular-season title it yielded to Saint Mary?s last year. It marks the 12th league title in 13 seasons for the Zags, who have set a team record for regular-season wins.

Chris Manresa scored 19 points to lead San Diego (13-16, 6-8), which has lost four straight.

The Bulldogs have won 10 straight games since a last-second defeat at Butler. Their only other loss was to Illinois, and they have the best winning percentage in Division I.

???
No. 5 FLORIDA 71, ARKANSAS 54

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Mike Rosario scored 15 points and Patric Young added 14 as Florida rebounded from one of its two Southeastern Conference losses.

Kenny Boynton and Erik Murphy both had 12 points for the first-place Gators (22-4, 12-2 SEC).

The Gators played their worst game of the season in falling behind early and losing 80-69 to Arkansas (17-10, 8-6) in Fayetteville, but never trailed in this one. Boynton made a 3-pointer to open the game, Rosario scored on a fast break and Young followed up a miss by Boynton with a rim-shaking dunk for a 7-0 lead.

The Gators pulled away for good with an 11-1 spurt to begin the second half.

Coty Clarke made all eight of his field goal attempts and led the Razorbacks with 18 points, while Anthlon Bell finished with 14.

???
No. 11 GEORGETOWN 57, No. 8 SYRACUSE 46

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Otto Porter scored a career-high 33 points and Georgetown put an emphatic stamp on the impending end of an era before an imposing Orange crowd.

Thirty-three years after the Hoyas halted Syracuse?s 57-game home winning streak at Manley Field House, Porter added his name to the pantheon of stars who made this rivalry scintillating over the years.

His incredible play stopped the Orange?s 38-game winning streak in the Carrier Dome, the longest in Division I, and it came in front of a disappointed record crowd of 35,012, the largest ever to see a college basketball game on campus. It was the fewest points scored by Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.

It was the final game between Georgetown (21-4, 11-3 Big East) and Syracuse (22-5, 10-4) in the Carrier Dome as members of the conference ? the Orange are leaving the Big East in July to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.

C.J. Fair had 13 points and seven rebounds for Syracuse, which was 4 of 20 on 3-pointers.

???
No. 9 KANSAS 74, TCU 48
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) ? Jeff Withey scored 18 points and Ben McLemore added 14 as Kansas avenged a stunning loss to the lowly Horned Frogs just over two weeks ago.

Perry Ellis and Travis Releford added 12 points each for the Jayhawks (23-4, 11-3 Big 12), who began the day tied with Kansas State for first place in the conference.

Kansas has won three straight since a rare three-game losing streak, one that included an embarrassing 62-55 loss to the Horned Frogs (10-17, 1-13) on Feb. 6. TCU still has not managed to beat another Big 12 team during its first season in the conference.

The eight-time defending Big 12 champions built a 38-9 lead by halftime and coasted the final 20 minutes to give coach Bill Self his 499th win.

The nine points scored by TCU were the fewest in any half in the last 15 years of Big 12 games, and the fewest allowed in a half by Kansas since Cornell scored nine on Jan. 2, 1996.

Devonta Abron had 18 points to lead the Horned Frogs, who have lost five straight by an average of nearly 22 since their victory over the Jayhawks.

???
No. 10 LOUISVILLE 79, SETON HALL 61

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Gorgui Dieng scored a career-high 23 points for Louisville. The 6-foot-10 center showed confidence in his jumper and the result was 10 of 11 shooting from the field. The junior also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

Russ Smith added 19 points and Luke Hancock made three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points as the Cardinals (22-5, 10-4 Big East) won their third straight.

The Cardinals forced 21 turnovers, including 12 steals, and shooting 26 of 57 (45.6 percent).

Aaron Cosby scored 17 points for lead Seton Hall (13-15, 2-13), which dropped its ninth straight. Eugene Teague added 16 points, Brian Oliver 12 and Fuquan Edwin 11 for the Pirates, who shot 23 of 52 (44 percent).

???
No. 12 ARIZONA 73, WASHINGTON STATE 56

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Kevin Parrom matched his career best with five 3 pointers ? in six tries ? scoring a season-high 19 points for Arizona.

Parrom, a 26 percent shooter from 3-point range in conference play before Saturday, opened the game with two 3s and the Wildcats (23-4, 11-4 Pac-12) led all the way. Arizona was up by as many as 21 points early in the second half before the Cougars cut it to 11 late.

Mark Lyons added 14 points and freshman Kaleb Tarczewski had a career-best 12 for the Wildcats.

Brock Motum scored 20 points but missed six free throws for the last-place Cougars (11-17, 2-13), who lost their eighth straight.

???
No. 13 KANSAS STATE 81, TEXAS 69

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Rodney McGruder scored 20 points and Kansas State stayed in the race for its first regular season conference championship since 1977.

Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats (22-5, 11-3 Big 12), who share first place in the conference with No. 9 Kansas. Kansas State made nine 3-pointers, shooting 50 percent from long range against a Texas defense ranked first in the country in defending the perimeter.

Myck Kabongo had 24 points, the most he?s scored in four games since returning from a 23-game NCAA suspension. Texas (12-15, 4-10) is 2-2 since his return, languishing near the bottom of the Big 12 in the Longhorns? worst season in 15 years under coach Rick Barnes.

Kansas State was 20 of 22 on free throws, including 8 of 8 by Angel Rodriguez, who finished with 16 points and six assists.

???
No. 14 OKLAHOMA STATE 73, WEST VIRGINIA 57

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Le?Bryan Nash and Markel Brown scored 16 points apiece to lead five Oklahoma State players in double figures.

Marcus Smart added 14 points, Brian Williams scored 13 and Michael Cobbins had 10 for Oklahoma State (20-6, 10-4), which shook off a double-overtime loss to No. 9 Kansas on Wednesday.

Oklahoma State overcame an early six-point deficit and never trailed after halftime, using its defense to stifle any comeback attempt by the Mountaineers (13-14, 6-8).

Aaric Murray led West Virginia with 11 points.

???
No. 16 NEW MEXICO 91, No. 22 COLORADO STATE 82

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ? Kendall Williams made a Mountain West Conference-record 10 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 46 points and New Mexico ended Colorado State?s 27-game home-court winning streak.

Alex Kirk added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lobos (23-4, 10-2 MWC), increased their lead in the conference race to two games over the Rams (21-5, 8-4).

Colton Iverson had 26 points and 15 boards for the Rams, who led 70-64 at the 6-minute mark. Williams, who had been on the bench with four fouls, returned and hit three 3s during a 14-2 run that gave New Mexico a 78-72 lead.

His 10 3-pointers broke the conference mark of nine set by several players, most recently UNLV?s Chace Stanback against Central Arkansas on Dec. 28, 2011.

???
VILLANOVA 60, No. 17 MARQUETTE 56

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) ? Darrun Hilliard scored 22 points and Ryan Arcidiacono and JayVaughn Pinkston both scored 11 to lead Villanova.

The Wildcats (18-10, 9-6 Big East) beat their third Top 25 conference team this season. They also beat Louisville and Syracuse to help bolster their bid to earn an NCAA tournament bid. The Wildcats are coming off a 19-loss season and missed the tournament for the first time since 2004.

Hilliard scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half to spark the Wildcats.

Junior Cadougan led Marquette (19-7, 10-4) with 12 points. He was the only player in double figures.

The Wildcats shot 57 percent in the second half to help them pull away.

???
No. 21 MEMPHIS 89, SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 73

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Chris Crawford and Shaq Goodwin scored 19 points each and Memphis claimed its second straight Conference USA regular season title.

Five Tigers finished in double figures as Memphis (24-3, 13-0 C-USA) won its 18th straight. D.J. Stephens scored 16 points, and, like Goodwin, was 6 of 7 from the field, while Joe Jackson had 15 points. Adonis Thomas scored 12 for Memphis, which shot 50 percent for the game, including 46 percent from outside the arc.

Dwayne Davis, who carried Southern Mississippi (21-7, 10-3) in the first half, finished with 28 points.

???
No. 23 OREGON 77, STANFORD 66

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Johnathan Loyd had season highs of 15 points and nine assists to lead Oregon.

Carlos Emory had 19 points and Arsalan Kazemi scored 15 points for the Ducks (22-6, 11-4 Pac-12), who gave coach Dana Altman his 600th career win and kept themselves tied with Arizona atop the league standings.

Loyd, making his ninth start in place of injured point guard Dominic Artis, was 6 of 8 from the field, had a career in assists.

Dwight Powell led the Cardinal (16-12, 7-8) with 16 points and Josh Huestis had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Oregon led 30-26 at halftime but outscored the Cardinal 11-4 early in the second half to go up 46-34 with 13:50 to play. Stanford never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

???
No. 24 VCU 75, XAVIER 71
CINCINNATI (AP) ? Troy Daniels scored 19 points, and VCU intensified its full-court defense and overcome a 17-point in the second half.

VCU (22-6, 10-3 Atlantic 10) forced 22 turnovers ? 12 in the second half during the big comeback. Daniels set a school record for 3-pointers in a season while leading the comeback.

Rob Brandenberg added 18 points and scored the Rams? final six, including two free throws with 10.8 seconds left that clinched it.

The Musketeers (15-11, 8-5) played the final 13:35 without point guard Dee Davis, who was hit in the forehead and cut above his right eye. He left for treatment with Xavier up by five points and never returned.

Davis and Brad Redford finished with 15 points apiece for Xavier, which dropped to 52-2 in A-10 home games since 2007.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The old adage is that to be the best, you have to beat the best. That certainly seems to be the case so far for the No. 1 Oklahoma softball team.

In defeating No. 23 Florida State, 6-0, on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Sooners improved to 15-0 on the season and 7-0 against ranked teams. In those seven wins, Oklahoma has outscored its opponents 47-0.

Oklahoma opened the scoring on Saturday in the second inning.

Shelby Pendley led off with a double that got under the glove of a diving Morgan Bullock in center field. After moving to third on a groundout, Pendley came home when Destinee Martinez doubled into the gap in left center.

Martinez came all the way around to score on the play when Florida State left fielder Kirstin Austin committed a throwing error as she threw the ball out of play.

The runs proved to be all the support that Keilani Ricketts needed in the circle.

In improving to 7-0, the senior struck out 11 and allowed just a lone single in the first inning as she threw her sixth shutout of the season and lowered her earned run average to just 0.78.

Ricketts and the Sooners retired the final 16 Seminoles batters of the game, not allowing a base runner beyond the second inning.

The Sooners' 2-0 lead doubled in the third inning as Georgia Casey reached on a one-out bunt single and came all the way around to score when Jessica Shults followed with a sharp grounder through the left side that ran to the wall for a double.

In the fifth inning, Lauren Chamberlain ripped a line drive home run over the fence in left center field for her eighth homer of the year and 38th of her career.

Oklahoma took advantage of a Florida State error in the fifth to make it 6-0.

Shults reached on a throwing error by Seminoles third baseman Briana Hamilton. After a wild pitch and a groundout, Pendley advanced Shults to third with a single through the right side. Williams then grounded out to first base, unassisted to plate Shults.

After playing their first 15 games away from Norman, the Sooners play their first home game this Friday as part of its Spring Preview Tournament. OU faces Nebraska on Friday in Norman at 6 p.m., before taking on Houston and the Cornhuskers in Oklahoma City on Saturday. A final contest against the Cougars rounds out play on Sunday.

Mad Catz F.R.E.Q. 7 gaming headset hands-on

Mad Catz announced the F.R.E.Q. 7 gaming headset last week, and the company has the $200 cans on hand here at Mobile World Congress. As you may recall, the marquee spec is Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing, which expands 5.1-channel audio to 7.1 channels for a richer aural experience. Another cool feature: these over-ears come bundled with both a standard stereo connector and a cord with USB for connecting directly to your computer (both have mini-USB on one end). The F.R.E.Q. 7 wasn't plugged in so we can't speak to sound quality, but they feel lightweight, and the red color really pops in real life. (There's also a matte black option.) The devices are currently available for pre-order, but you can get a hands-on look now in our gallery.

Go Time! NFL Combine Confidential

Go Time! NFL Combine Confidential

Editor?s note: It?s only late February, and we?re already in the mood for football again. So we asked a projected top 15 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, to take us inside his prep for this weekend?s NFL Combine. Here are his thoughts.

What?s up, NFL fans? I?ve got the biggest ?job interview? of my life this weekend at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. But I?m going to have a smile on my face the whole time because this is what you dream about, and it?ll be a blast for me. I?d rather be eating, breathing and playing football 12 hours a day than flipping burgers. It?s going to be intense, but I?m going to be myself and I?m confident I?ll be ready for whatever?s thrown at me. This is why I declared for the Draft?I felt it was time to step up my football career, take my talents and positive attitude to the NFL, and see how I measure up. I want to make my family, friends and fans proud.

-

If you want to separate yourself at the Draft, they say you need to be bigger, faster, stronger, more intelligent and more athletic.

-

So how did I prepare to get here? Mizzou played in the SEC for the first time and against some great competition, like eventual BCS champion Alabama, but we didn?t get the season we wanted. I felt I had a pretty solid year [editor?s note: Sheldon led all defensive tackles in the SEC with 75 tackles], so after my last game for Mizzou in November, I began planning for this weekend. First, I took some time off because I understand the importance of resting your body, so you can come back refreshed for the challenge. I did some light lifting and some running while home in St. Louis to stay in shape. But come the New Year, I headed to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Who you callin? yellow?

They do it right at the IMG Academy, which is a terrific facility, and there were some really big names for the Draft there with me, like Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, plus quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Tyler Wilson?

If you want to separate yourself at the Draft, they say you need to be bigger, faster, stronger, more intelligent and more athletic. I went to the IMG Academy with good strength, speed and movement, but I sharpened up my overall technique, and got a better understanding of how NFL offenses operate.

Here?s a typical day down in Bradenton: We would wake up at 6 in the morning and complete 12 very intense hours of covering everything, six days a week. There?s no room for slackers down there. You?re working on Combine-specific movement training and weight training. Plus, they teach you little off-field tricks of the trade, like how to deal with the media. I enjoyed learning how to handle interviews. You?re taught to be yourself but maybe come off a little smoother in interviews. I?m a straightforward kind of guy?a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type?but you have to learn how to be professional with the media.

They also taught us about good nutrition. You learn to eat an NFL diet, which is a huge part of a professional football player?s life, and something that can make your career last longer. You learn to stay off the fried foods and eat well but right?no rich sauces on your steak or vegetables. They make sure you get into a routine, three meals a day. At dinner, we?d have five options for a main course?baked salmon, tilapia, steak, maybe baked-not-fried chicken, buffalo chicken. You had some tasty options, so it wasn?t like cafeteria food! If you needed to gain good weight, they?d give you extra portions.

It?ll be a lot less painful if you just hand that loaf over, bro.

They also set you up with vitamins, and stressed the importance of keeping hydrated. I put on a good 10 pounds, up to right around 300. The NFL scouts want to see you put on good weight but still be an explosive guy. With my 40-yard drills, I improved my 40 time by maybe a tenth of a second. I was happy with that because I?m so much stronger than I was.

We?ve been told the Combine is four days of non-stop activity, starting as soon as you arrive. Meeting teams, doing interviews, and if they like you enough they?ll come out to your college facility for Pro Day. We D-linemen are doing the 225-pound rep drills on Sunday, and the running drills on Monday. Everything?s at stake. It?s a chance to improve your position in the Draft. Personally, I just want to show them what I?ve got and display my strengths on and off the field.

I really don?t get nervous. If anything I?m anxious to get out there and perform. I?m very prepared for the biggest few days of my life. I?m confident with my training and my preparations, and I?m expecting a very good Combine out of myself. I enjoy my job, and I?m going to have some fun showing what I can do.

I?d like to thank the agents at CAA for recommending the IMG Academy. It was a really positive learning experience. Wish me well at the Combine and check in with me after the big event. Follow me on Twitter @godforshort. See you on the other side, and go Tigers!

?As told to Ashley Jude Collie

Housing prices rise in 53 of 70 Chinese cities

Business?| ?Real estate

By Cherry Cao??|?? 2013-2-22??|?? ??ONLINE EDITION

RECOVERY in the housing sector continued to gather pace across the country with more than 70 percent of major Chinese cities recording monthly and yearly gains in January, the National Bureau of Statistics said today.

Excluding government-subsidized affordable housing, prices rose from a month earlier in 53 of the 70 cities tracked by the bureau, compared to 54 in December. Prices were flat in seven cities while the remaining 10 registered declines.

Shenzhen in Guangdong Province led the gains with a monthly increase of 2.2 percent, followed by a 2.1 percent jump in Beijing and a 2 percent rise in Guangzhou. That compared with a maximum gain of 1.2 percent in December.

Shanghai housing prices gained 1.3 percent, up from a 0.7 percent increase in December.

Year on year, new home prices rose in 53 of the 70 cities, with a maximum gain of 4.7 percent. That compared to 40 in December, when the biggest increase was 2.4 percent.

"More developers started to offer smaller discounts or even canceled them amid the improving buying sentiment while a growing number of home seekers decided to stop waiting for prices to drop," said Liu Jianwei, a senior statistician at the bureau. "However, I don't see a huge rebound in home prices as the government reiterated its vows to fight housing speculation."

The State Council said on Wednesday its policy to curb housing speculation while supporting owner-occupier demand will remain as home supplies are inadequate in large cities as urbanization accelerates.

In the latest move, China's cabinet asked local governments to vigorously enforce existing austerity measures, which include home purchase restrictions and differentiated credit and tax policies, and expand a property tax trial to more cities. It also said tightening measures should be implemented if prices rise notably fast in areas without restrictions.

The statistics bureau's data also pointed to a similar trend in the existing home market with 51 cities seeing month-on-month price increases in January, compared to 46 in December. The number of cities where prices gained from a year earlier also rose from 25 in December to 36 last month.

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, which monitors dozens of real estate developers across the country, said earlier this week that it expects overall property prices to rise about 5 percent this year. S&P has also revised its outlook for the industry to stable from negative amid more favorable operating and financing conditions for developers.

NBA Trade Deadline: Ronnie Brewer an Underrated Acquistion for Thunder

In a relatively quiet deadline, the Oklahoma City Thunder made two minor moves, sending point guard Eric Maynor to the Portland Trail Blazers and acquiring forward Ronnie Brewer from the New York Knicks.

Brewer, who averaged just 3.6 PPG and 2.2 RPG on 36.6% shooting with the Knicks, has seen sporadic minutes since the season began. Averaging career lows pretty much across the board, Brewer was struggling to find his niche within a complex New York team, but ultimately could not carve out an effective role, as the Knicks appear stocked with competent wing players.

However, this tumultuous season may be approaching some promise, as Brewer seems to be a significantly better fit in Oklahoma City.

While Brewer has never been an offensive force in his career, the Arkansas product can be a solid role player in the right system.

Luckily for Brewer, the Thunder won't be asking him to score in double figures on a nightly basis due to a collection of young assets such as Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Martin and Serge Ibaka.

However, Brewer will certainly help on the defensive end, as he has proven throughout his career that he is a capable defender.

With the help of Brewer, the Thunder now can have a completely new dynamic. Oklahoma City has never had a true backup small forward to complement Durant, but now has Brewer to serve this particular role.

By adding Brewer, the Thunder now have a high energy defender off the bench that can serve a similar role as teammate Thabo Sefolosha does at the shooting guard position, locking down the opposing threat while scoring occasionally on offense.

What do you think about the Ronnie Brewer trade?

What do you think about the Ronnie Brewer trade?

  • Good move

  • Bad move

The acquisition of Brewer will directly help the Thunder against a team such as their newfound rival Miami Heat.

The Heat tend to play a lot of smaller lineups, as they tend to shy away from playing with a true center. Miami's smaller lineup proved to be effective against the Thunder last season, as the Heat were able to space the floor and players such as Shane Battier, Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers stepped up and hit three pointers at opportune times.

With the addition of Brewer, the Thunder will finally be able to answer this threat. A smaller lineup featuring Westbrook, Sefolosha, Brewer, Durant and Ibaka would counter the small lineup the Heat tend to use effectively.

Adding a quality player like Brewer who plays solid defense and can contribute off the bench seems like a solid fit for the Thunder, as the team attempts to collect solid wing defenders to counter LeBron James.

Brewer is only making the veteran's minimum on a one-year contract and the Thunder sacrificed just a 2014 second round pick for the swing-man, so it's clear that the trade was worth the risk.

Christchurch marks 2nd anniversary of deadly quake

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) ? The New Zealand city of Christchurch is commemorating the second anniversary of an earthquake that destroyed thousands of homes and killed 185 people.

Several hundred people gathered for a memorial service in Latimer Square, near where 115 died when a six-story office building collapsed during the magnitude-6.1 quake. Others placed flowers in road cones or tossed them into the Avon River to commemorate those who died.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister John Key focused on rebuilding efforts. He said he understands there's frustration at the time it's taking to get homes rebuilt, but that in a few years, Christchurch will be "one of the best and most livable cities in the world."

People around New Zealand observed two minutes' silence at 12:51 p.m., the time the quake struck.

U.S. indicts peanut processors in 2009 salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four years after a salmonella outbreak linked to tainted peanut butter sickened hundreds in the United States and killed nine, authorities have charged the former owner of the company and several employees with fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday alleged the group covered up the presence of salmonella in its peanut products for years, going so far as to create fake certificates showing the products were uncontaminated even when laboratory results showed the reverse.

The charges carry penalties of up to 20 years in jail, although none carry a mandatory minimum sentence, prosecutors said.

"When those responsible for producing or supplying our food lie and cut corners, as alleged in the indictment, they put all of us at risk," Stuart Delery, head of the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Division, said in a statement.

The peanut scandal led to one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history and forced Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), the manufacturer, into liquidation. Former owner Stewart Parnell, 58, is among those charged, as is his brother, Michael Parnell, 54, a food broker at P.P. Sales who worked on behalf of the peanut company.

Lawyers from Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore LLP, who represent Stewart Parnell, said in a statement they were disappointed that the government had decided to pursue an indictment and were planning a "vigorous defense."

"While Mr. Parnell and others associated with PCA have to date remained silent on the circumstances surrounding the government's salmonella investigation, as this matter progresses it will become clear that Mr. Parnell never intentionally shipped or caused to be shipped any tainted food products capable of harming PCA's customers," the law firm said.

Their statement also said U.S. health regulators were regularly in contact with PCA about its food handling policy and were well aware of its salmonella testing protocols, and made no objection to the testing policies or protocols in place.

At a press conference in Washington on Thursday, Delery said company officials had lied to inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which found that PCA produced peanuts under unsanitary conditions and failed to take adequate precautions to keep rodents and insects out of its plant in Blakely, Georgia.

Delery said the Justice Department would do everything possible "to protect Americans who have done nothing more than eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich."

William Marler, an attorney who represented victims of the contamination, said the indictments will have a far reaching impact on the food industry.

"Corporate executives and directors of food safety will need to think hard about the safety of their product when it enters the stream of commerce," he said. "Felony counts like this one are rare, but misdemeanor charges that can include fines and jail time can and should happen."

Those affected by the outbreak welcomed news of the 76-count indictment.

"I'm ecstatic," said Jeff Almer, whose mother died after eating tainted peanut butter. "I would equate it to wishing for something to happen more than anything else you ever wanted in life, and waiting years for it to occur."

"This has been my life's mission for the last four years since my mom died - to try to get some justice," he said.

In addition to the Parnells, charges were also levied against Samuel Lightsey, 48, a former operations manager at the plant, and Mary Wilkerson, 39, who held various positions including receptionist, office manager and quality assurance manager.

Another employee, Daniel Kilgore, 44, has pleaded guilty to mail and wire fraud and to the introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce. He waived an official indictment.

A conviction for fraud or obstruction of justice carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, while illegally introducing tainted food into interstate commerce carries a three-year maximum.

Actual sentences could be much lower, said Michael Moore, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, who said he expects those charged to appear in court within the next week.

And the Winner Is? | BU Today | Boston University

Megan Lovallo (COM?12) won first prize at the 2013 Redstone Film Festival on Wednesday night for her film Off to the Races. Photos by Katherine Taylor

When she heard her name called as the winner of the 33rd Redstone Film Festival Wednesday night, Megan Lovallo jumped up, grabbed her two closest friends, and dragged them onto the Tsai Performance Center stage, where she accepted a plaque and a check for $2,000. Just minutes before, the closing credits to her film Off to the Races had rolled to enthusiastic applause.

?It?s crazy,? Lovallo (COM?12) said, when asked afterward about her reaction. ?I can?t even remember. I?ve already blacked out.? But the filmmaker said she hopes her film?about two siblings thrown together for an unplanned night of adventure?will inspire viewers to find a way to love family members as friends, not just as lifelong genetic tag-alongs. Lovallo, a twin with an older sister, drew on her own experience for inspiration in writing her film.

Second prize, which came with $1,000, went to ?lvaro Congosto (COM?12), director of The Dress, about a young man obsessed with a photograph. Michela Smith (COM?14), director of Cul de Sac, a film about a self-appointed traffic cop patrolling his small suburban neighborhood, earned the $500 third prize.

The Redstone Film Festival, BU?s version of the Oscars, is sponsored by media mogul Sumner Redstone (Hon.?94), chair of Viacom. The annual festival showcases the most promising work by students and recent grads of the College of Communication?s filmmaking and screenwriting programs.

Other Redstone finalists were Bill Politis (COM?13), director of Big Kid Little Bike, a documentary about a BMX biker; John (Jack) Garrett (COM?13), whose spoof Santa Always Checks Twice, depicts a grim trip to Santa?s workshop; Jasper Lowe (COM?15), director of The Intruder, a film about a thief who encounters more than he expected; and Phoebe Waldron (COM?12), director of Zareen on a Bridge in the City, chronicling a young woman?s struggles in the days leading up to her college graduation.

?One of the things that impressed me this year was how assured the work was,? says Paul Schneider, chair of COM?s department of film and television and the night?s emcee. ?It felt like the directors and everyone were really in command of what they were doing.? That?s quite a statement, he adds, considering finalists included undergraduate and graduate students from every level of film production.

33rd Annual Redstone Film Festival, Boston University student films, filmmakers, directors

Redstone finalists and family and friends and film fans packed the Tsai Performance Center.

A committee of production, screenwriting, and film-studies graduates selected the seven finalists from dozens of submissions, all originally produced for a COM film, television, or video production class or as a graduate thesis project. Winners were then chosen by a panel of film industry professionals: Carolyn Pickman, cofounder and director of CP Casting and Acting Studio; filmmaker Lyda Kuth, executive director of the LEF Foundation, a nonprofit that supports contemporary work in film; and ?Will Lautzenheiser (CAS?96, COM?07), a popular former COM lecturer in screenwriting.

Festival organizers decided to add three new prizes this year: for best cinematography, best screenplay, and best sound design. The cinematography prize was awarded to Erika Street (COM?13) for The Dress; best screenplay went to Waldron and Deena Baig (CAS?12) for their work on Zareen on a Bridge in the City; and the best sound design award was given to Garrett for Santa Always Checks Twice. Winners in each category received $500.

?Even though we single out filmmakers, rewarding the efforts of a lot of people is important and what we stress as a school,? says festival coordinator Jan Egleson, a COM associate professor of film and television. ?The job of a director is really harnessing the efforts of many creative people.?

Kelly M. Genois (COM?13), who wrote Rest in Peace, Albert Lively, won the $1,250 first prize in the Fleder-Rosenberg short screenplay contest, sponsored by screenwriters Gary Fleder (COM?85) and Scott Rosenberg (COM?85). Cara Fano (COM?14) received the $750 second prize award for penning Uncle Sylvio. Richard Woolbert (COM?13) picked up the $500 third prize for Tea Time for Tyranny.

Another festival winner was Michelle Tsiakaros (COM?13), who was awarded the second annual Adrienne Shelly Production Grant by the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, for her directing of Plastic Surgery. Named for noted producer, writer, and actress Shelly (COM?87), who was murdered in her New York City home in 2006, the annual $5,000 grant goes to a female filmmaker. Shelly?s best-known film, Waitress, starring Keri Russell, played at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival before being released commercially.

Andy Ostroy, Shelly?s husband and the foundation?s executive director, attended Wednesday night?s event flanked by their 10-year-old pony-tailed, gum-chewing daughter, whom he affectionately called his ?lawyer.? The foundation, he said, ?is an organization I never wished I had to establish,? but he wanted to encourage a new generation of women to ?stay true to yourself,? as Shelly herself had.

In the video above, watch the trailer for the 33rd Annual Redstone Film Festival winner Off to the Races directed by Megan Lovallo.

Winning an award at the Redstone Film Festival is often a launching pad for aspiring filmmakers. Previous winners include Fleder, director of Runaway Jury, Richard Gladstein (CGS?81, COM?83), producer of The Bourne Identity and Snow White and the Huntsman, and Steve Brill (COM?84), screenwriter of Con Air. Just last year, previous Redstone finalists Josh Safdie (COM?07) and Benny Safdie (COM?08) won a Jury Prize for Short Film at the Sundance Film Festival for The Black Balloon.

The Boston Redstone Film Festival is followed by Redstone festivals in New York (designed primarily as a showcase for alumni) on March 15 and Los Angeles (open to both students and alumni) on March 21. The Redstone Alumni Short Film Competition, with a prize of $500, is part of the Los Angeles festival.

RedBus Continues To Dominate In India, But That?s Not What Makes Them Special

India_Bangalore_Bus_As I start my trip in India along with Dave McClure’s “Geeks On A Plane,” I started to read about all of the startups in India that are used to proving that the country is making inroads and is relevant. It’s a story that I’m very familiar with in emerging markets: a group of VCs and entrepreneurs that want to prove that India is worthy of time, effort and, more importantly, investment. One of the companies that I had heard quite a bit about is called RedBus.in, a service that has standardized and centralized India’s bus system. Having been to India before, I kind of laughed at the notion of that being possible, even after having read Sarah Lacy’s fantastic piece about them from two years ago. This was supposed to be one of the “ones,” the company that is supposed to make the investment world make the pilgrimage to Bangalore, India, which is about 18 hours worth of flights away from Silicon Valley. I visited the RedBus offices, which don’t seem to have change much since Lacy described them, but I did notice something new. I spent time in India two years ago, so trust me on this. It was a sign that happily announced that RedBus was hiring. It doesn’t sound like much – maybe a sign that the company is growing – but it was my first signal that something very special was happening in these offices. Our entire “tour” packed into RedBus’ conference room, and once we were introduced to the team it didn’t feel like we were in India. We were in a successful startup’s office and they were about to matter-of-factly explain to us why and how they’ve disrupted a system in a country that had no business being disrupted. All Aboard Buses in India are a lifeline, along with manual and motorized rickshaws. There’s not much joyriding happening in this country; it’s very much a “point A to point B” proposition. When I say that, I mean that a group of friends aren’t going out to a club. Someone is going to the market to bring food back for their family. When it comes to travelling outside the city in which residents live, the bus is the only option. There are thousands of buses. They’re cheap compared to trains and flights, and people will take a 23-hour bus ride from one side of

(AP) ? In a disheartening signal to world powers at upcoming Iran talks, Tehran has started installing high-tech machines at its main uranium enrichment site that are capable of accelerating production of reactor fuel and ? with further upgrading ? the core of nuclear warheads, diplomats said Wednesday.

Iran already announced last week that it had begun mounting the new enriching centrifuges, but one diplomat said at the time that the announcement was premature with only a "small number" on site and not yet installed.

Diplomats told The Associated Press on Wednesday, however, that installation was now well on its way, with inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency seeing close to 100 or more machines mounted when they toured the site a few days ago. Depending on experts' estimates, the new-generation centrifuges can enrich uranium three to five times faster than Iran's present working model.

The Islamic Republic insists it is not working on a nuclear weapons program, but rather is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and for scientific and medical purposes ? as allowed by international law.

But many nations are suspicious because Iran went underground after failing to get international help for its uranium enrichment program in the 1980s, working secretly until its activities were revealed a decade ago. More recent proposals for international shipments of reactor fuel in exchange for Iranian enrichment concessions have foundered, with each side blaming the other.

Shrugging off demands to mothball enrichment ? and growing international sanctions ? Iran has instead vastly expanded the program to where experts say it already has enough enriched uranium for several weapons if the material is further enriched.

The start of the centrifuge upgrade at Natanz, Iran's main enrichment site southeast of Tehran, flies in the face of world-power efforts to induce Iran to scale back on enrichment. As such, it is likely to hurt chances of progress at Feb. 26 talks in Kazakhstan between the two sides ? adding to a string of negotiating failures.

When Iran announced its intentions last month, Western diplomats downplayed the proclamation's significance, noting Tehran did not say when it would start populating Natanz with the new machines. But any start of an upgrade is sure to increase international concerns, particularly if verified as expected in an IAEA report later this week.

The three diplomats speaking to the AP on Wednesday all are involved in the Vienna-based IAEA's attempts to monitor Iran's nuclear program. They demanded anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss confidential information.

Meeting Iran in Kazakhstan are the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Russia and China often are at odds with the West on how harshly Iran's nuclear activities should be censured, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said recently that Iran was within its legal rights to install new generation centrifuges. At the same time, he called for a suspension of uranium enrichment during negotiations to improve the political atmosphere.

While moving to increase the potency of its enrichment program with the new centrifuges, however, Tehran also has recently resumed converting some of its higher-level enriched uranium at its Fordo enrichment site into reactor fuel plates after suspending the activity last year. That is likely to provide some reassurance to nations concerned about Iran's nuclear aims because the plates are difficult to reconvert back into weapons usable material.

About 700 of the old machines at Fordo are churning out higher-enriched material that is still below ? but just a technical step away ? from weapons-grade uranium. Iran says it needs that higher-enriched level to fuel a research reactor

With higher-enriched uranium their immediate concern, the six powers over the past months have inched toward meeting Iranian demands of sanctions relief but say Tehran must first suspend its output at Fordo. Iran, in turn, wants sanctions eased before it commits to even a discussion of an enrichment cutback.

The diplomats said Iran was also upgrading its enrichment capabilities at Fordo but declined to provide further details ahead of the release of the IAEA report.

In first revealing plans to update last month, Iran indicated that It could add more than 3,000 of the new-generation centrifuges to the more than 10,000 older models it has at Natanz turning out enriched uranium at grades lower than at Fordo. The lower the grade, the harder it would be to turn into weapons-grade material.

Olli Heinonen, the former IAEA deputy director general in charge of Iran, told the AP last week that Iran could install 3,000 or more of the high-tech centrifuges at Natanz within six to nine months, assuming that Tehran had the material to make the machines.

Iran, in its dealings both with the six powers and the IAEA, has continually acted as if it were in the position of strength. On Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, asserted that his country was not seeking nuclear weapons, but that if Tehran intended to build them, "the U.S. could in no way stop the Iranian nation."

David Albright, whose Institute for Science and International Security is a source for the U.S. government on proliferation issues, said Iran's hopes that the new centrifuges could strengthen its hand at the Kazakhstan talks could backfire.

"Given the low expectations for negotiations during the next several months, Iran risks giving the impression to the West that it is racing to the bomb rather than strengthening its negotiating position," he said Wednesday.

But analyst Yousaf Butt, professor and scientist-in-residence at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, said that ? with Iran legally entitled to enrich ?the six powers first "should consider rolling back some sanctions" if they want Iran to respond.

Hackers use alert system for zombie warnings

DETROIT (AP) -- Warnings about the zombie apocalypse may seem pretty amusing, but officials say they're dead serious about figuring out who hacked into the nation's public warning system to broadcast such messages in a handful of states.

So far, people in California, Michigan, Montana and New Mexico have heard the warnings about attacking zombies that have been sent over the Emergency Alert System.

"Local authorities in your area have reported the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living," one message warned. "Do not attempt to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are considered extremely dangerous."

The subject matter may be humorous, but Greg MacDonald with the Montana Broadcasters Association said the consequences of such attacks on the alert system could be severe.

"This looks like somebody being a prankster, but maybe it's somebody testing just to see if they could do this, to do some real damage," MacDonald said. "Suddenly you create a panic and people are fleeing somewhere and you end up with traffic jams and accidents and who knows what."

The U.S. recently replaced its old telephone-based alert system with a web-based one. The Federal Communications Commission sent an urgent advisory Tuesday urging stations to reset their alert system passwords, disconnect Internet connections or take other steps to make sure the equipment is protected from outside attack.

In Michigan, hackers broke into the system with audio or text messages at two stations on Monday. Michigan Association of Broadcasters President Karole White said the breach appeared to be related to default passwords that the stations hadn't changed.

In Los Angeles, a radio station that had its alert system breached sent out a zombie message, according to Richard Rudman, a broadcast engineer and vice chair of the California State Emergency Communications Committee. He declined to name the station but said any that were hacked were using default passwords for their alert systems or lacked adequate computer security.

The FCC on Tuesday also asked stations to check their equipment to make sure no further unauthorized alerts were queued up for future transmission, according to a copy of the advisory provided by the Montana Broadcasters Association.

No one has been arrested in connection with the hacking incidents.

Other attempts to access to emergency systems in recent days were thwarted by updated passwords, said Edward Czarnecki with New York-based Monroe Electronics, which manufacturers the alert equipment used by most television and cable companies.

Where the hackers succeeded, Czarnecki said a failure by stations to provide adequate computer security was at fault.

All U.S. broadcasters are required to be part of the Emergency Alert System, which evolved from Cold War-era systems dating to the 1950s and '60s. The system was created so the president could address the public in a national emergency, but it's mainly used by state and local authorities to deliver weather warnings and Amber Alerts. The first national test of the revamped system was in November 2011.

WNMU in the northern Michigan city of Marquette was broadcasting an episode of "Barney and Friends" just before 4 p.m. Monday when an ominous voice warned of zombies on the loose. The station quickly caught the errant message and disabled the system.

"There were really no complaints," said station general manager Eric Smith. "A couple of viewers ... called, wondering what it was all about."

Michigan FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet said his office has been notified but declined further comment. The Associated Press left messages with representatives of the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Homeland Security.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said its public alert and warning system wasn't breached and the hacking incidents did not affect its ability to activate the system nationally. FEMA also said it's supporting the FCC and other federal agencies on the investigation.

White, who oversees the alert system in Michigan, says she's confident that systems there are now secure, though any breach is a concern.

"We feel fortunate they were not able to get into the entire Emergency Alert System ? that's the good news," she said. "The bad news is they got in at all."

Google outlines the security enhancements in Android 4.2

Security is always big news when it comes to Android, although most of the time, the news has to do with some scaremongering about malware on the platform. This time, however, we get to talk about the security enhancements that Google has been implementing in the newest version of the Android system, 4.2 Jelly Bean. We already know that Android 4.2 adds a sideload scanner to protect users against malware, and we have heard about other security enhancements, but today, Google outlined some of the enhancements that help to make Android safer for developers (and root/mod users).?

In the Android Developer Blog, Google talks about new security features in Android 4.2, including?a better random number generator, more secure ways for apps to use Javascript, and changes the default way that access is granted to content providers, preventing the chance for unauthorized access. The blog also talks about a new tweak to USB debugging in Android 4.2.2, which will not only be good for developers but root users and modders too.?

In Android 4.2.2, Google has added a new option to USB debugging which effectively allows a user to lock USB debugging mode except when connected to a specific PC. This is helpful for root users, because a few root apps require USB debugging to be turned on, like Titanium Backup, but secure USB debugging would limit access to your device to only authorized computers.?

Not a bad set of features. Now the update just needs to get out to more than just Nexus devices.?

Morgan Brownlow to Cook at Tasty n Alder. Morgan Brownlow Gone ...

This happened so fast my brain has whiplash. The biggest topic of conversation at the Quartet friends/press dinner on Monday, was that the notorious Morgan Brownlow was out of John Gorham?s new Tasty n Alder restaurant before he even started!

Gorham announced Morgan?s involvement a few weeks ago, saying that he would be cooking on the night shift. This raised lots of eyebrows, because Morgan has a reputation of being really difficult to work with ? over the years I?ve gotten more nasty emails about his interactions with employees than any other chef.

The announcement was quickly followed by an interview of Morgan in Willamette Week by Michael Zusman. Here are a couple of quotes:

?

How do you respond to critics who say you?re impossible to work with?a screamer, crazed tyrant, etc.?

I?m an intense person. When I first sat down with John Gorham, he told me that I?m a bombshell, a powder keg. I?m just a really intense individual. But that?s no excuse for blowing up. And when I was younger, at Clarklewis, I did that. I know that I was out of line on multiple occasions.

Zusman had obviously heard the rumors of Brownlow?s once wild lifestyle and asked another pointed question:

Ever been treated for any mental health or drug and alcohol issues?

No. As far as alcohol goes, I mean, I?ll have a few drinks. But when you?re broke, you?re not going out drinking. I?ve never been arrested. I?m sure there?ve been a few times when I?ve drank too much, but it?s never had anything to do with my work.

I read the Willamette Week interview with Morgan, and then went back to read Nancy Rommelmann?s interview with him in 2007. It?s?really interesting to compare the two. I?ll let you draw your own conclusions.

As far as Tasty n Alder goes, yes, it is now open for breakfast. I went in over the weekend and tried the ?Bim Bop Bacon & Eggs?. Take a hot stone bowl, add rice which gets nice and crusty around the edges from the heat, add nice sweet chunks of pork belly, kimchi and break an egg over the top. Wow! It was an ?A? dish ? I can?t wait until I can get off the couch and try morel (housebound once again)

"I have a wide-range of food experience - working in the restaurant industry on both sides of the house, later in the wine industry, and finally traveling/tasting my way around the world. Whether you agree or disagree, you can always count on my unbiased opinion. I don't take free meals, and the restaurants don't know when, or if, I am coming."

10 Tech Projects, One Weekend

No. 1. Make a List
Total Time: 2 Hours

First, make a plan that?s achievable. Your list should include a balance of projects, from the have-tos (sensible data backup) to the want-tos (whole-home audio!). Don?t forget all the adapters, tools, and other supplies you?ll need. Order cables ahead of time online?they?ll cost far more in a last-minute run to the store.

No. 2. Back Up Every Byte
Total Time: 2 Hours
Equipment: NAS drive ($100 to $200), 10-foot Ethernet cable ($3)

Before a weekend of mucking around with your gadgets, make sure to back up your data. We recommend getting a network-attached storage (NAS) drive, which will back up all the computers in your home. Windows and Mac OS X both have built-in software that automates the process. If you haven?t backed up in a while, get the process started and go to sleep?it will take all night.

No. 3. Rework Your Work Space
Total Time: 2 to 3 Hours
Equipment: Tablet computer ($500 to $1000), 23-inch or larger screen ($200 to $600), Desk lamp ($10 to $200), Wireless keyboard and mouse ($140), Tripp Lite 8-outlet Vertical Power Strip ($60), Ergonomic chair ($100 to $800)

Ergonomics Experts are like nagging mothers: ?Clean up your desk! Sit up straight!? And like nagging mothers, they?re right. The human body isn?t designed to sit and stare at a screen all day, but we do it anyway. We consulted ergonomist Alan Hedge at Cornell University on how to turn a desk from an orthopedist?s nightmare into a productive work space.

1. Desktop Keep your desk clear enough so there?s room to rest your wrists without scrunching your shoulders or supporting them on a sharp desk edge.

2. Monitor The top of your screen should be at or just below eye level. The dual-hinge Dell S2340T ($649) adjusts its angle from fold-flat to upright. It is also a touchscreen, which has no ergonomic value but is cool.

Practices should ask patients questions on initial and subsequent visits

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 13, 2013) By relying on hunches rather than posing a few screening questions, primary care clinicians may be missing three-fourths of the alcohol problems in their patients, a newly released analysis shows.

"It's often off the radar people come in for hypertension and are not asked how much they drink," said study co-author Barbara J. Turner, M.D., M.S.Ed., M.A., M.A.C.P., of UT Medicine San Antonio. Primary care offices typically don't have good systems to administer questionnaires to screen for certain problems, including alcohol consumption, she noted.

UT Medicine is the clinical practice of the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Dr. Turner is a professor in the School of Medicine and director of the Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH) Center, a collaboration of the Health Science Center, the University Health System and the UT School of Public Health.

The study analyzed data from 1,664 patients in 40 primary care practices spread throughout the central part of the country from Colorado to Kentucky. Patients were asked five questions such as: "In the past 12 months, how often have you had a drink containing alcohol?" and "In the past 12 months, how often have you been under the influence of alcohol in situations where you could have caused an accident or gotten hurt?" Based on their scores, patients were classified into four drinking status categories ranging from nondrinker to harmful drinker.

Clinical intuition

Clinicians were asked, "Does this patient have problems with alcohol (check each that applies)?" Options included "yes," "hazardous drinking" and "don't know." When clinicians checked an affirmative answer, this was considered a suspicion of an alcohol problem.

If clinicians suspected a problem, they were usually right, Dr. Turner said. However, clinical intuition misses too many people, the findings indicated.

"When clinicians do assess alcohol consumption, it is usually limited to the first encounter. Afterward, it is only assessed when there is an evident problem," Dr. Turner said.

Societal issue

Alcohol problems are insidious and pervade all aspects of society, from work productivity to health decline to family and personal issues. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010 the number of alcoholic liver disease deaths totaled 15,990 and the number of alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides, was 25,692.

More than half of adults age 18 and older described themselves as current regular drinkers (at least 12 drinks in the previous year), according to the 2011 National Health Interview Survey. Lost workdays related to alcohol use numbered 570 million over a 12-month period, the survey reported. According to the CDC, one in six U.S. adults binge drinks about four times a month, consuming about eight drinks per binge.

Regular screening

"Brief alcohol screening questions far outperform clinical intuition in identifying people with alcohol problems, and brief counseling interventions can significantly reduce risky drinking in these individuals," Dr. Turner said.

"Patients should be screened for alcohol problems on a regular basis," she added.

Although medical students and residents are increasingly being trained to ask questions that can identify patients for counseling, lack of time remains a problem. "We need to involve the entire practice team in addressing this issue," Dr. Turner said.
