Asian shares capped but Nikkei soars on U.S. growth hopes

By Chikako Mogi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares were capped on Tuesday by caution over weak global growth data, but renewed hopes for a steady U.S. recovery propelled Japanese equities to a near five-year peak.

European stock markets were seen tracking Asian shares lower, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open flat to down as much as 0.3 percent. <.l><.eu/>

U.S. stock futures were down 0.1 percent, suggesting a softer Wall Street open after the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> closed at a record high overnight. <.n/>

The boost to riskier assets after a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data on Friday has given in to profit taking, reflecting a lack of investor confidence in broader economic prospects.

"There is some profit-taking coming in after the sharp rise in prices we saw in the recent days," said Tetsu Emori, a commodities sales manager at Astmax Investments in Tokyo, referring to oil prices.

"The current fundamentals are very weak, with China slowing down and with U.S. demand not so strong."

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> eased 0.1 percent, struggling to gain after hitting a 2-1/2-month high on Monday when market sentiment was buoyed by the U.S. monthly employment report.

The main focus for Asia was the Reserve Bank of Australia's policy meeting, at which the bank decided to lower its cash rate by 25 basis points to a record low 2.75 percent.

Markets had priced in a 50-50 chance of a rate cut, and the decision sent the Australian dollar down to a two-month low of $1.0810 but helped Australian shares trim earlier losses. Australian shares <.axjo> were last down 0.2 percent.

The next key event for the region will be a slew of April data from the world's second-largest economy, China, starting with trade on Wednesday, inflation on Thursday and money supply and loan growth expected from Friday.

"Post-nonfarm payroll euphoria has proved short lived and despite U.S. markets grinding higher overnight, markets are now on the look out for their next reason to rally," Jonathan Sudaria, a trader at Capital Spreads, said in a note to clients.

Hong Kong <.hsi> and China shares <.ssec> lingered at multi-week highs in choppy trade as investors rotated out of recent outperformers ahead of upcoming Chinese data.

South Korean shares <.ks11> fell 0.3 percent, led by automakers, and weighed by caution ahead of Thursday's policy decision by the Bank of Korea as well as a weaker yen.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225>, however, soared 3.7 percent to rise above 14,000 for the first time since June 2008, helped by signs of resilience in the United States, Japan's top export market. <.t/>

Japanese markets were closed on Friday and on Monday for holidays.

COMMODITIES MIXED

London copper was up 0.3 percent at $7,290.25 a tonne, after earlier hitting a three-week high of $7,374 on signs the U.S. economy was in a better shape than earlier thought and hopes demand from top consumer China may pick up.

U.S. crude futures slid 0.6 percent to $95.56 a barrel and Brent fell 0.4 percent at $105.06.

Spot gold eased 0.3 percent to $1,464.96 an ounce, weighed by continuing outflows in holdings at SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, which hit their lowest since August 2009.

"I think sentiment is quite mixed. Physical demand supports gold but you can see some liquidation in the market," said Peter Fung, head of dealing at Wing Fung Precious Metals in Hong Kong.

"Gold in the medium-term is still a little bit bearish. You can see holdings on SPDR are still down about 3 to 4 tonnes every day."

The euro inched up 0.1 percent to $1.3087, after it fell on Monday when European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said the bank, which cut interest rates last week, is watching economic data and is ready to take further action if needed.

The dollar was off 0.2 percent against the yen at 99.16, possibly readying to test the symbolic 100 yen level again. The dollar hit a four-year high of 99.95 yen on April 11.

While the U.S. nonfarm payrolls data caught traders off guard, with the unemployment rate falling to its lowest since December 2008, other economic indicators were gloomier, including purchasing managers indexes from the euro zone and China.

US Senate Passes Marketplace Fairness Act - PMA

The PMA has issued the following press release:

Performance Marketing Association Congratulates US Senate for Passing Marketplace Fairness Act?

The 76,000 small Internet businesses wiped out by states? unconstitutional attempts at regulating interstate commerce are closer to getting back in business.

CAMARILLO, May 6, 2013 ? The Performance Marketing Association (PMA) expresses thanks and gratitude to the US Senate for passing the historic Marketplace Fairness Act (MFA) today.

This is the first and critical step in reversing the devastation caused by the passage of unconstitutional ?Affiliate Nexus Tax? laws passed by 9 states. These state laws have wiped out 76,000 small Internet advertising businesses since 2008, devastating one of the fastest growing technology sectors in the US.

The ?Affiliate Nexus Tax? laws created a loophole for over 1,000 online retailers: they could avoid collecting sales tax for those 9 states if they sever advertising agreements with these 76,000 Internet advertising businesses. The results were not at all what was intended: these 9 states not only did not collect new sales taxes from online retailers, but they lost income tax revenue from the devastation to the incomes of those 76,000 small businesses.

?Passage of the Marketplace Fairness Act will require all retailers, whether online or offline, to collect sales tax for all states, and remove the ability to avoid collection obligation if they sever Internet advertising agreements,? said Rebecca Madigan, executive director of the Performance Marketing Association. ?This will allow online retailers to reinstate their advertising agreements and get 76,000 small Internet advertising companies back in business? Madigan concludes.

The PMA looks forward to the US House of Representatives picking up the bill and passing it quickly. The PMA would, in particular, like to thank the bill?s key bi-partisan sponsors who have advocated tirelessly for this change for many years: Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN).

The Performance Marketing Association (PMA), headquartered in Camarillo, Calif., is a not-for-profit trade association founded in 2008 to connect, inform and advocate on behalf of performance marketing, a multi-billion-dollar marketing channel, which comprises more than 200,000 businesses and individuals. Continued growth of the performance marketing space is expected as advertisers, facing small budgets and big expectations, increasingly look to performance-based marketing initiatives to expand their business. Obama: North Korea has failed again

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Tuesday that North Korea can no longer create an international crisis with nuclear provocations, asserting the United States and South Korea are fully capable of defending themselves.

"The days when North Korea could create a crisis and elicit concessions, those days are over," Obama said from the White House East Room, after he and South Korean President Park Geun-hye met privately in the Oval Office.

Obama's comments came in a news conference with Park on her first foreign visit as the country's leader. It marked the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-South Korean alliance.

Obama said that Pyongyang has failed to drive a wedge between the U.S. and South Korea or to garner global respect with its threats. He says the joint U.S.-South Korea meeting at the White House was evidence that North Korea has "failed again."

Ahead of the meeting, U.S. officials said North Korea has taken a step back from its recent escalation of regional tensions by removing from its launch site a set of medium-range ballistic missiles that had been readied for possible test-firing.

Obama says he doesn't know North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally and has never spoken to him, but says he can still take a different path. He said actions by the unpredictable young leader, who came to power after the death of his father Kim Jong Il in December 2011, seem to pursue a dead end.

"There's going to have to be changes in behavior," Obama said. "We have an expression in English, 'Don't worry about what I say, just watch what I do.'"

Park arrived at the White House with a color guard lining the driveway from Pennsylvania Avenue. Her Oval Office meeting, working lunch and joint news conference with Obama will be followed Wednesday by an address to a joint meeting of Congress.

Obama said such an address is an honor "reserved for our closest of friends." He called Park "tough," spoke of a great friendship between the two nations and joked that "the Korean wave" of culture has hit the United States.

"My daughters have taught me a pretty good 'Gangnam Style,'" Obama joked, a reference to the hit dance song by South Korean singer PSY that has become YouTube's most watched video with 1.5 billion views since its release last summer.

Park has had something of a baptism of fire since she took office in February, two weeks after North Korea's latest atomic test ratcheted up tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula and undermined her hopes of forging a more trusting relationship with a difficult neighbor.

"Instead of just hoping to see North Korea change, the international community must consistently send the message with one voice, to tell them and communicate to them that they have no choice but to change," Park said.

After the U.N. Security Council tightened sanctions on North Korea in response to the nuclear test ? its third since 2006 ? it claims to have scrapped the 1953 Korean War armistice and has threatened nuclear strikes on the U.S., prompting Washington to bolster missile defenses.

Two Musudan missiles at a site in eastern North Korea had been in what American officials described as launch-ready status for some weeks. Two U.S. officials confirmed their removal on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss a matter involving sensitive U.S. intelligence. It's not clear why they removed the missiles in recent days, but Pentagon press secretary George Little said on Monday that U.S. officials have seen a "provocation pause" by North Korea.

Park touched down in New York on Monday, meeting first with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister who praised her "firm but measured" response to North Korean provocations and determination to resolve their differences though dialogue.

However, Park made clear in an interview on the eve of her visit that she was willing to get tough on North Korea. She told CBS News that if South Korea came under attack, "We will make them pay."

Park, the first democratically elected female leader in Northeast Asia, is no stranger to Seoul's Blue House, as the residence of the chief executive is known. She's the daughter of the late South Korean dictator Park Chung-hee, and in her 20s she took over the duties of first lady for five years after a gunman claiming orders from North Korea killed her mother in a botched attack targeting her father.

While focused squarely on the North Korean threat, Park's visit is a chance to build a rapport with Obama, who enjoyed an unusually close bond with the previous South Korean leader, Lee Myung-bak. The two presided over the adoption of a U.S.-South Korean free trade pact in 2012 that expanded the scope of an alliance largely built on security ties and deterring an attack from the North. Some 28,500 U.S. troops are still based in South Korea for that purpose.

Lee took a hard line on relations with Pyongyang, cutting aid to the impoverished nation. While his approach had Obama's firm backing, public frustration in the South has mounted over the North's continued weapons tests and provocations ??" including attacks in 2010 that left dozens of South Koreans dead.

In a change of tone, Park, although a conservative, has advocated trying to build trust with Pyongyang through aid shipments and large-scale economic initiatives if there's progress on the nuclear issue, even as she and South Korea's military promise to respond forcefully to any possible attack from the North.

But to date, relations have only gotten worse. Most recently, North Korea has withdrawn its 53,000 workers from an industrial park on its territory run by South Korean companies. After Pyongyang rejected Seoul's offer of talks, the South last week withdrew its last staff from the facility, closing the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation that began during the "sunshine" engagement policy championed by Lee's more liberal predecessors.

On Tuesday, North Korea threatened the U.S. and South Korea over joint naval drills taking place this week in the Yellow Sea. The section of the Korean People's Army responsible for operations in North Korea's southwest said it will strike back if any shells fall in its territory during the drills. Should the allies respond to that, the statement said, Pyongyang's military would then strike five South Korean islands that stand along the aquatic frontline between the countries.

Daniel Russel, White House senior director for Asian affairs, said Obama would reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the defense of South Korea. He said the joint appearance of the two leaders at the White House would make it crystal clear to Pyongyang that the allies stand shoulder to shoulder.

"In dealing with North Korea, it's vital we show unity," Russel told reporters.

Dealing with Pyongyang's secretive regime, never easy, has become increasingly tough under the unpredictable young leader Kim Jong Un, who came to power after the death of his father Kim Jong Il in December 2011.

Russel cautioned it was premature to judge whether North Korea's cycle of provocation "is going up, down or zigzagging." He said both the U.S. and South Korea support "incremental engagement" with Pyongyang, but it has to take "irreversible steps" signaling a commitment to end its nuclear program.

The past year has already seen disconcerting progress in the North's weapons development, including its first successful launch of a three-stage, long-range rocket, although it is not yet believed to have to have the means to fire a nuclear-tipped missile at mainland America.

The Obama administration has put increasing emphasis on the role the North's main ally and benefactor, China, can play to press Pyongyang to honor its previous commitments on denuclearization. In a significant move, one of China's biggest banks said Tuesday it has halted business with a North Korean bank accused by the U.S. of financing Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs in the latest sign of Beijing's displeasure with its estranged ally.

Politics, Priorities, Psychology and Hope WITHIN The Black ...

Detroit Free Press article

Let me be clear from the outset:

While I applaud former GM executive Roy Roberts work to stabilize the fiscal condition of the Detroit Public School System - as I say with the European sovereign debt problem - the act of "pushing paperwork (financial instruments, ie: bonds, debt cancelation, etc) without the evidence of organic production and value creation that backs these "new figures" is not proof of a new direction for the entity in question."

Roy Roberts has proven competence and organizational leadership skills.
THIS POST AIN'T ABOUT ROY ROBERTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need to make note that - after a more than 35 year run of leadership in Detroit - THE (mostly) Black children who were preparing themselves to live up to the oft heard phrase: "EDUCATION IS THE GATEWAY TO EQUALITY" were instead assaulted as the forces that the adults in their community yielded their "Black Community Development HOPES" to failed them but ultimately knew that the community would still support them IF they promoted an ENEMY for the congregation to rally in defense of.

I HAVE ACCEPTED POLITICS FOR WHAT IT IS:?? ORGANIZED FRAUD AND LYING for the purposes of advancing a particular agenda (all before the entity that the 'Dung Producing Party Animals' goes bankrupt from the 'flimflam' that they are both running).

I HAVE A PROBLEM when "THE BLACK COMMUNITY CONSCIOUSNESS" is USED as a facade for this fraud.??? The interests of the Black community is summarily TRICKED AWAY as the "The Least Of These" that have INVESTED THEIR VALUABLES in the past - are strung along.?? In this "Three Card Monte" game - they never get wise to the fraudulent card game that they are compelled to play by the EMBEDDED CONFIDENCE MEN that they have entrusted.

In The "Victories" That The Black Community Recognizes For "The Team" - There Is Great Loss Of "Black Institutional Integrity" - Thus Retaining "The Blacks" As Disproportional Representation In "The Least Of These" - Causing The Disciples Of "Fake Social Justice Jesus" To Asked To Be Judged On HOW THEY TREAT THE POOR - Rather Than HOW MANY OF THEIR VALUABLES THEY HAVE TAKEN

What we are seeking, people, is the product of the FUSION of the "Black Community Consciousness" in with "The Malcolm X Political Football Game".???? With VOTING as evidence of POPULARISM - those who can point to the grand total of "VOTES FROM AMERICANIZED NEGROES AS AFFIRMATION OF THOSE WHO HAVE THEIR INTERESTS IN MIND" - Black People who choose to accept this CIRCULAR REFERENCE are co-conspirators.

Those who are responsible for ENGINEERING this "Americanized Consciousness" via the Black Media - can point to the bang up job that they have done in framing the issue - KEEPING THE ENEMY ON TRIAL.?? It is only when we move beyond POPULARISM and instead LOOK AT THE CONDITION OF THE NEGRO despite his AFFIRMATIONS to "stay the course" - that we see the hand of the FRAUDULENT ENGINEERS that go unchecked per their access the the "Black Community Consciousness Nucleus".

The problem IS NOT "VOTING".
The problem is what the AMERICANIZED NEGRO HOPES TO ACHIEVE THROUGH VOTING.

When the orchestrators have success in compelling the "Americanized Negro" to assume an existential defensive posture against THE ENEMY THREAT - and they compel the "Americanized Negro" to hand over their valuables - the THOUGHT LEADERSHIP within the Black Community - who, per their egoism created a CENTRALIZED model because a DISTRIBUTED model would threaten their own position which is seen as "Helping The Black Victim Against The Racist Right-Wing Threat" (that even threatens the BLACKEST, most PROGRESSIVE cities in America) - we see that all of this is engineered for the purpose of USING THE 'IGNORANT AMERICANIZED NEGRO' FOR THE PURPOSES OF KEEPING THIS DOMINATE IDEOLOGY AND BRAIN TRUST IN POWER.

There IS NO INDEPENDENT ENTITY that dares to SEPARATE the "EXECUTIVE" from the "POLICY MAKING" within the Black Community. ? ? With this fusion within the Black community - the REGULATORY CAPTURE THAT THE EMBEDDED CONFIDENCE MEN NEED TO ALLOW THEMSELVES TO GO UNCHECKED - AT THE EXPENSE OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY - IS CONTINUED.

Detroit boosted by truck sales; Honda, Nissan gain

DETROIT (AP) ? Ford, GM, Chrysler and Nissan all reported double-digit U.S. sales increases last month, signaling the best April for car and truck sales in six years.

A rebound in pickup truck sales led the way, especially for the Detroit automakers. Small businesses are replacing aging trucks that they've kept since the Great Recession.

Ford's sales increased 18 percent, with the F-Series pickup gaining 24 percent. At Chrysler, sales rose 11 percent, led by the Ram pickup, with a 49 percent sales increase. GM also saw an 11 percent sales jump, with Chevrolet Silverado pickup sales rising 28 percent for the month.

Nissan reported a 23 percent sales gain over April of 2012. Honda sales rose 7 percent, led by the CR-V small crossover SUV, while Hyundai sales were up 2 percent on strong sales of the Elantra compact. The only laggards were Toyota, with a sales decline of 1 percent, and Volkswagen, with a drop of 10 percent.

Americans continue to buy new cars and trucks even though unemployment remains high and economic signals of late have been mixed. All automakers report monthly sales Wednesday, and industry analysts expect an overall increase of around 10 percent over April of last year. That would make it the best April since 2007.

Chrysler Group LLC said it sold 156,698 cars and trucks last month. Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV increased 27 percent. Dodge brand sales rose 18 percent, with the Dart compact car posting its best month ever with sales of nearly 8,100. But the Chrysler brand struggled, with sales falling 13 percent.

Ford Motor Co. sold 212,584 cars and trucks. The F-series pickup remains the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. Sales totaled 59,000 in April. And sales of the redesigned Escape SUV rose 52 percent.

General Motors Co. reported sales of 237,646 cars and trucks. Even with gas prices on the decline, compact cars remain popular. Sales of the Chevy Cruze rose 21 percent.

Nissan saw demand for the recently redesigned Altima midsize car and Sentra compact. The company also took a step toward boosting future sales. It announced price cuts on seven models that make up 65 percent of its U.S. sales. The cuts, effective on Friday, run from $580 on the top-selling Altima to $4,400, on the Armada big SUV.

VW's sales drop was led by its top-seller, the Passat midsize car, which fell 10 percent.

Despite a slight drop, Toyota was optimistic about the rest of the year. Sales chief Bill Fay said the overall market increase is a good sign for all automakers, "especially with new products, low interest rates and plenty of pent-up demand."

Chrysler predicted that total U.S. sales will hit an annual rate of 15.4 million in April. That's a little higher than most analysts' predictions. April is likely to be the sixth straight month of sales above a 15 million yearly pace.

Barring an unexpected event that causes a real estate price collapse or rapidly rising job losses, there's little to stop sales from growing further in the next few years, industry analysts say.

"I don't see any significant hurdles on the horizon," said Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst at Kelley Blue Book. "I don't see us taking a step back, provided the unemployment rate at least holds steady."

He expects U.S. auto sales to end the year around 15.3 million cars and trucks, up 5.5 percent from last year's 14.5 million.

U.S. unemployment stands at a stubbornly high 7.6 percent, but that hasn't slowed auto sales much.

Aside from unemployment, almost every factor that affects car and truck sales is positive. Interest rates are low ? the average four-year loan on a new car is 2.4 percent, according to Bankrate.com. Also, credit is widely available, even to those with low scores. Used-car values are high, so car buyers can get good trade-in value for their old cars. Lease deals are good. Gas prices have fallen since February.

In addition, home-building is on the rise, up 7 percent from February to March. That means better sales of big pickup trucks as companies and laborers return to the market. Kelley Blue Book expects big pickup sales to rise more than 26 percent in April over a year ago.

Many businesses and consumers need to replace older trucks and cars. The average age of a U.S. vehicle is 11.2 years. Plus, automakers have rolled out dozens of exciting new models in the past year, drawing buyers into showrooms.

"Relatively lower gas prices coupled with small business demand improving for trucks resulted in a strong showing for small and large pickups in April," said Jesse Toprak, senior analyst for the TrueCar.com auto pricing site.

One category that's soaring is small crossover SUVs. Sales rose an estimated 22.5 percent in April, according to Kelley Blue Book. Fuel-efficient models such as the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are driving sales, Gutierrez said.

Kelley Blue Book estimates that auto prices fell slightly in April compared with a year ago, to an average of $31,326.
