Samsung woos less affluent phone users to beat seasonal gloom

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the iPhone's main adversary, is expected to post a 46 percent jump in first-quarter earnings as sales of mid-tier smartphones helped tide the South Korean giant over the off-peak season.

Samsung, due to release its January-March earnings guidance early on Friday, likely increased its quarterly operating profit to 8.3 trillion won ($7.5 billion), a survey of 42 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S showed. That would be 6 percent less than the record 8.84 trillion won earned in October-December.

The Galaxy S and Note series have fuelled Samsung's record-breaking earnings growth and made it the No.2 player in the global premium smartphone segment after Apple Inc. But as the high-end market swarms with new offerings, Samsung is turning to less affluent customers in emerging markets, offering cheaper models such as the Rex and Galaxy Pop, analysts said.

"Increasing sales of mid-tier products on top of the usual solid sales of its flagship models of the Galaxy S and Note probably helped Samsung fare better than its peers," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities.

"The first quarter will be the bottom of its earnings cycle for this year, and things will only get better from here as it rolls out new mobile products."

Samsung capitalised on its 30-plus smartphone models that cover nearly all price points to boost shipments to a record in the first quarter while the post-year end holiday season dulled sales at Apple, analysts said.

The South Korean firm likely shipped 68-70 million smartphones, up from 63 million in the December quarter, according to five analysts.

By comparison, Apple's iPhone shipments likely slumped some 30 percent to the 30 million range from 47.8 million in the previous quarter, they said.

Shares in Samsung, worth around $220 billion, fell 3 percent over the past three months, exceeding a 2 percent drop in the wider market. Apple lost 19 percent in the same period.

END OF RECORD QUARTERS

The 8.3 trillion won estimated operating profit for January-March will mark the end of five record quarters.

But analysts said Samsung will likely mint a fresh all-time high of 9.7 trillion won in the current quarter as the Galaxy S IV hits the market later this month.

Of the 42 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, four predicted Samsung might surprise with a record first-quarter profit of up to 9.0 trillion won after the firm slashed spending on marketing from 12.8 trillion won in the fourth quarter.

Samsung's mobile devices division alone is estimated to have earned 5.8-6.4 trillion won in the first quarter, eclipsing the entire 5.7 trillion won that Samsung earned in the year-earlier period from all its businesses.

JPMorgan, the most bullish, estimates Samsung will report a 6.7 trillion won profit from the mobile division alone.

Samsung, which gets 70 percent of its overall profit from its mobile devices business, is due to release its final first-quarter earnings results by April 26.

Soaring smartphone sales are increasingly becoming a major pillar just when parts supplies to Apple slow.

Lee at NH Investment & Securities estimates that Samsung's microchip production rate fell to 80 percent of capacity due to reduced orders from Apple as its biggest mobile processing chip client struggles with weak sales of iPad tablets.

"Reduced microchip sales to Apple is a major drag for its chip business, although recovery in computer memory chip prices eased the Apple impact on the overall bottom line," said Seo Won-seok, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, slashing the first-quarter earnings forecast for Samsung's chip business by 11 percent.

Samsung pushed back construction of a new chip plant late last year, and said it would keep this year's investment flexible as Apple diversifies away from Samsung in component purchases.

Kurdish party denies Ocalan asked PKK rebels to leave unarmed

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's main pro-Kurdish political party denied on Thursday media reports that jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan had told his fighters to leave the country without their weapons under a peace plan.

A weapons-free withdrawal by Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), as sought by the government, would be seen as a significant step towards ending a conflict which has dragged on for three decades and killed more than 40,000 people.

The Yeni Safak daily, which is close to the government, said Ocalan had given the withdrawal message on Wednesday to a delegation from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) which visited him in his island prison, south of Istanbul.

BDP co-leader Selahattin Demirtas, who was one of the delegates, said Ocalan had prepared a letter on the subject but had not delivered any message on Wednesday.

"First of all I want to state clearly that Mr. Ocalan did not pass on a clear message regarding the withdrawal during our visit yesterday, nor did he give us a letter," Demirtas told Kurdish television channel Nuce TV in a telephone interview.

"However, he told us he had written a letter on this subject and that it would reach us in one or two days. We expect to receive this letter today or tomorrow. He said the details were in this letter," Demirtas said.

It was not clear whether the letter would be addressed to the PKK or others, but Demirtas said a reply was expected to be sent to Imrali within a week. He said developments on the withdrawal were expected to become clear next week.

Only Ocalan and a few Turkish officials have direct knowledge of the peace process and details until now have only filtered out through media close to the government.

The PKK declared a ceasefire with Turkey last month in response to an order from Ocalan after months of talks with Ankara to halt a conflict that began in 1984.

The group has demanded legal protection to prevent military attacks on its fighters during their planned departure to northern Iraq, a condition rejected by the government.

Hundreds of PKK militants are estimated to have been killed in clashes with security forces during a previous withdrawal in 1999 after Ocalan's capture and conviction for treason.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said he guarantees there will be no repeat of such fighting. But he opposes legislation, saying the rebels should disarm before heading for Iraq to remove the risk of firefights with Turkish forces.

NO BLOODSHED

Ocalan's supporters have gathered to celebrate his April 4 birthday in southeast Sanliurfa province, where he was born. In a message read out there on Wednesday evening, he appealed for their support for the process, saying he had fulfilled his role.

"I am calling on everyone who says 'I am honorable', whether rich, poor, male, female, young or old, to conform with and develop this (peace) process," he said in a message read out to the crowd in the district of Halfeti.

His supporters set off fireworks and chanted "Long live the leader Apo (Ocalan)" as the message was read out, the Kurdish Firat news agency reported.

"I hope that not a drop of blood will be shed as this process develops. Nobody should harm another. Everyone should participate in this process with love," he said.

Later on Thursday, Erdogan will meet the members of a new 63-strong "wise people commission", made up of academics, journalists and performing artists, established by the government to promote the process nationwide.

A deputy from Erdogan's ruling AK Party presented on Wednesday a proposal to form a parliamentary commission to assess the peace process. The withdrawal will be monitored by Turkish intelligence and the Kurdistan regional government.

The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, launched its insurgency with the aim of carving out an independent state in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey, but later moderated its goal to autonomy.

Pro-Kurdish politicians are focused on expanding minority rights and stronger local government for the Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population of 75 million people.

Breakthrough cancer-killing treatment has no side-effects in mice: New chemistry may cure human cancers

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Cancer painfully ends more than 500,000 lives in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The scientific crusade against cancer recently achieved a victory under the leadership of University of Missouri Curators' Professor M. Frederick Hawthorne. Hawthorne's team has developed a new form of radiation therapy that successfully put cancer into remission in mice. This innovative treatment produced none of the harmful side-effects of conventional chemo and radiation cancer therapies.

Clinical trials in humans could begin soon after Hawthorne secures funding.

"Since the 1930s, scientists have sought success with a cancer treatment known as boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT)," said Hawthorne, a recent winner of the National Medal of Science awarded by President Obama in the White House. "Our team at MU's International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine finally found the way to make BNCT work by taking advantage of a cancer cell's biology with nanochemistry."

Cancer cells grow faster than normal cells and in the process absorb more materials than normal cells. Hawthorne's team took advantage of that fact by getting cancer cells to take in and store a boron chemical designed by Hawthorne. When those boron-infused cancer cells were exposed to neutrons, a subatomic particle, the boron atom shattered and selectively tore apart the cancer cells, sparing neighboring healthy cells.

The physical properties of boron made Hawthorne's technique possible. A particular form of boron will split when it captures a neutron and release lithium, helium and energy. Like pool balls careening around a billiards table, the helium and lithium atoms penetrate the cancer cell and destroy it from the inside without harming the surrounding tissues.

"A wide variety of cancers can be attacked with our BNCT technique," Hawthorne said. "The technique worked excellently in mice. We are ready to move on to trials in larger animals, then people. However, before we can start treating humans, we will need to build suitable equipment and facilities. When it is built, MU will have the first radiation therapy of this kind in the world."
