Free tax software available for some military families

Military families have special challenges with their finances and that includes tax preparation. TurboTax has just released a new version of its tax preparation software created specifically for military filers. For a limited time, it?s free for junior enlisted personnel.

?TurboTax Military Edition was created by active reserve and retired military personnel and military spouses, and they really understand the unique challenges of filing taxes when you?re in the military,? explained spokeswoman Julie Miller. ?There are more than two million military taxpayers, and because they have a unique set of needs, we realized that we had to have a more personalized product that met those needs.?

TurboTax Military Edition gives step-by-step guidance to help service members claim every deduction and credit they?re entitled to, so they can keep more of their hard-earned money. This includes determining state of residency, filing in multiple states, deductions for relocation expenses and uniforms, combat pay, and what to do if you have a PCS (permanent change of station).

?It speaks their language,? Miller said. ?It uses the terms they?re familiar with to make it easier for them.?

TurboTax will be fully up to date with the new tax laws by early next week, Miller said.?From now through Feb. 14, this software is free for junior enlisted personnel (rank E-1 to E-5) in any branch of the Armed Forces. It?s also available during this time period for $24.95 (a $5 discount) for anyone ranked E-6 through officer.

Every military member using this TurboTax software, even the free version, can get one-on-one advice via phone or chat from one of the company?s tax experts.

Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, also has joined with Operation Homefront to help military members who need financial support and assistance.

Through a joint fundraising effort called Mission2Match, Intuit will match up to $1 million in donations made to Operation Homefront through April 15, 2013. TurboTax customers can donate as part of their online tax preparation.

?We are asking our customers to join us and give generously to support U.S. servicemen and women and their families,? Dan Maurer, an Intuit senior vice president, said in a statement.

Donations are also being accepted on the TurboTax Facebook page and YouTube channel. Only donations made through this Mission2Match program are eligible for the company?s match. Donations will be matched a second time if donors tweet about the fundraising effort (#mission2match).

?We?ve found that many people want to support our service members, but don?t always know how,? said Jim Knotts, president and chief executive officer of Operation Homefront in a statement. ?By combining their technology and huge public reach, TurboTax is giving their customers the opportunity to provide that support exactly when it is most on their minds.?

Biogen says Lou Gehrig's disease drug fails in trial

(Reuters) - An experimental drug to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease in the United States, failed to work in an important trial and Biogen Idec said it would stop development of the treatment.

The drug, dexpramipexole, had shown promise and seemed to work against ALS in a mid-stage clinical trial in 2011.

Biogen shares fell 6 percent in premarket trading on Thursday.

ALS is a disease of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that affects about 30,000 Americans, according to the ALS Association. About 5,600 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year. American baseball player Henry Louis "Lou" Gehrig died of the disease in 1941.

There is currently only one drug that is used to help people with ALS - Rilutek, or riluzole, made by Sanofi. It has been shown to prolong the life of people with ALS, who have a life expectancy of two to five years after diagnosis.

The news was an uncommon blow for a company that has excelled in recent years and could push shares down about 10 percent, Mark Schoenebaum, a biotech analyst at ISI Group, said in an early research note.

He said analysts had estimated sales for the drug in 2016 of about $350 million - or about 4 percent of Biogen revenue.

The late-stage dexpramipexole trial, which was called Empower and enrolled 943 people with ALS at 81 sites in 11 countries, did not show that the drug increased the ability of people with the disease to function or improved their survival rates.

"We share the disappointment of members of the ALS community, who had hoped that dexpramipexole would offer a meaningful new treatment option," Biogen Executive Vice President of Research and Development Douglas Williams said in a statement.

The company said it would continue to work on potential treatments for the disease.

Nutrient-sensing enzymes key to starvation response and survival in newborn mammals

In the perilous hours immediately after birth, a newborn mammal must survive the sudden loss of food supply from its mother. Under normal circumstances, newborns mount a metabolic response to ward off starvation until feeding occurs. This survival response involves a process of controlled breakdown of internal energetic sources known as autophagy. Although autophagy has been well documented, the key mechanistic regulators of autophagy in vivo have remained poorly understood.

Whitehead Institute researchers have discovered that a family of nutrient-sensing enzymes, dubbed Rag GTPases, modulates the activity of the mTORC1 protein complex, whose inhibition is essential for autophagy and survival in newborns. The finding, reported this week in the journal Nature, emerges from the lab of Whitehead Member David Sabatini, whose earlier in vitro studies showed that mTORC1 (for "mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1") senses the presence of vital amino acids via interactions with Rag GTPases.

To assess the impact of this Rag GTPase-mTORC1 relationship in mammals, the lab generated mice genetically altered to continually express an active form of the GTPase RagA and compared them with wild-type mice. In normal mice, RagA is activated in the presence of nutrients, and turns on the mTORC1 pathway, which regulates organismal growth in response to nutrient availability. If the mice are deprived of nutrients, RagA is switched off, deactivating mTORC1 and initiating autophagy to tide the animal over until the next feeding. However, in the altered mice, RagA's continuous activity keeps mTORC1 active, despite a dearth of available nutrients. Instead of mTORC1 triggering autophagy, the animals' metabolisms remain unchanged, resulting in nutritional crisis and death.

"What happens to a newborn animal with the RagA enzyme always on is pretty shocking," says Sabatini, who is also a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "A normal neonate animal within an hour after birth responds to that condition, but one with its RagA stuck 'on' doesn't, and it dies. It basically has a huge energetic and nutritional crisis because it can't make the adaption."

These striking results stunned Alejo Efeyan, a postdoctoral researcher in the Sabatini lab, and first author of the Nature that describes this work.

"We were surprised that there was no inhibition of this pathway independent of RagA?that there is no backup system," says Efeyan. "And that RagA is a more global nutrient sensor that goes beyond its known function as an amino acid sensor."

RagA's role as an amino acid sensor had been established in cultured cells by the Sabatini lab. Yet when Efeyan compared nutrient levels in fasting newborn RagA-active mice with those of fasting pups with normal RagA, not only amino acids were reduced in RagA-active animals, also glucose levels were dangerously low. The animals were unable to "sense" either of these reductions, so autophagy failed to initiate in the RagA-active pups, which all died within hours of birth.

This newly identified function for RagA suggests much remains unknown about the cell biology of nutrient sensing, an area of research that Sabatini and his lab continue to investigate.

Think of an Academy Award. Or the Nobel Prize. Or your company?s ?Employee of the Year? award. Now think of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

They all have something in common. They are all honors.

Not entitlements. Honors.

Unfortunately, in sports, fans and media have developed a twisted perception of Halls of Fame, and especially when it comes to baseball. And that?s why there is so much debate when, really, there shouldn?t be.

Induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame is an honor. It is given based on the subjective judgment of hundreds of voters using criteria stated by the Hall itself, which include ?character? and ?integrity.? And those voters will put whomever they want to put in the Hall. Period.

The whole thing has been turned around. Likely it is the result of the collective egos of fans and media who believe they have a proprietary interest in the process. They don?t. The only people who matter in determining induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame are the voters themselves.

A belief has been created that if a baseball player reaches certain statistical plateaus and/or boasts particular achievements, he?s in. And if he isn?t voted in, then it?s some travesty of justice.

It?s not. That?s ridiculous. It?s an honor. Nobody has a right to be honored. It?s a privilege. It?s a bonus. It?s icing.

When the debate pertains specifically to players who are suspected of having used performance-enhancing drugs for a significant portion of their careers, why would they expect to be honored? They sullied the game. If you were an actor and you brought shame to your profession, would you still expect to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Academy?

And as far as having proof, a voter doesn?t need proof. It?s a subjective judgment. If he sincerely believes a guy cheated, that?s all he needs. It?s an honor. A voter can honor whomever he wants. He doesn?t need to explain.

What is especially galling is that many of these players have been rewarded many times over. They were rewarded with glory, all the excitement and adulation of playing a beautiful game and having fans and reporters swoon over their feats. They were rewarded with huge sums of money ? amounts that became even larger when they put up cartoon numbers as a result of using drugs.

But apparently that?s not enough. They not only want to be rewarded with glory and money. They also want to be honored on top of it.

Really, there is only one answer to such a player in this debate: You?ve got to be kidding me.

Black Monday firings 'fair' or 'unfair'?
Let?s take a close look at Black Monday and assign ?fair? or ?unfair? tags to a few of the recently unemployed. It?s only fair.

Fair: The San Diego Chargers? firing of head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. This team has missed the playoffs for three straight seasons. And quarterback Philip Rivers appears in decline, partly as a result of the state of the team. This franchise desperately needs a facelift, and a few nips and tucks as well.

Unfair: The Chicago Bears fired head coach Lovie Smith. Last time I looked, Smith wasn?t an offensive lineman in charge of protecting quarterback Jay Cutler, or a sorely needed target for him. Smith is being blamed for a 3-5 finish when he should be credited for the miracle of a 7-1 start, even considering that those vanquished teams weren?t great. He deserves a new job with a better run club.

Fair: Romeo Crennel was axed as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. If you are as good as your record says you are, then Crennel (2-14 in one full season) did a poor job, albeit under trying circumstances. No coach should have to face the tragedy that occurred involving Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend. But beyond that, the Chiefs seemed like laughingstocks from the beginning of the season, and there wasn?t a hint of improvement on the horizon.

Unfair: The Cleveland Browns shove head coach Pat Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert out the door. This is only unfair in the sense that, despite going 5-11, the Browns showed glimpses of promise, like beating the Bengals in the middle of the season, or coming close to upsetting the Cowboys on the road. Shurmur has some skill as a coach. But the Browns finished poorly. And new owner Jimmy Haslam has a right to hire his own people. So a mixed bag here.

Fair: Andy Reid gone in Philly. Actually, I think Reid was not the problem there, and I believe the Eagles will miss him. Yet this was a bad chemistry experiment, and Reid was on the job when it blew up. Reid is an excellent coach, but if ever it was time for a change and a housecleaning with the Philadelphia Eagles, it?s now.

Torii out of line with his 'gay teammate' remarks
Former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter has come under fire for his comments about homosexuals in sports and having a gay teammate. In a story for the Los Angeles Times, Hunter said: ?For me, as a Christian ? I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it's not right. It will be difficult and uncomfortable."

I?m not the type who believes in shouting down somebody because they hold views that are different from mine. I think everybody is entitled to his opinion, no matter how wrong or stupid it might be.

Hunter has always been one of the good guys in sports, which makes the following so difficult.

First off, this whole ?biblically, it?s not right? thing has to end. People cherry pick what they want from the Bible to support their own view of the world. The Bible tells us not to eat shellfish (Leviticus 11:9), not to sport tattoos (Leviticus 19:28) and not to get divorced and remarried because it?s considered adultery (Mark 10:11-12). So unless Hunter is willing to publically admonish one of his adulterous tattooed teammates while he?s eating lobster ? and you know such men exist ? he?s being a hypocrite, which by the way, is also outlawed in the Bible (Matthew 7:5, among others).

Second, somebody?s personal life should be none of anybody else?s business. Hunter should concentrate on being a professional ? which he has done throughout his career ? and refrain from making a teammate feel unwelcome. Part of the job of being Torii Hunter is being a leader. An openly gay teammate doesn?t have to be an issue at all ? unless somebody like Hunter makes it one.

That?s the really disappointing part.

Bowl game names are a joke
I?m sure that 20 years from now, one of the members of the Michigan State Spartans will want to share with his son the stirring tale of how his team prevailed in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. And the son will look up wide-eyed at his father and say, ?The what?!?

I know that well into the future, alumni of the 2012 Syracuse football team will have a reunion to relive the glory of victory in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and over cocktails at the bar the most common question will be: ?What was it called again??

In 2014, we?ll finally have a four-team playoff format to decide the national champion in college football. Those three extra games likely will be incorporated into the major bowls. But that won?t end the real issue here: Why the dopey corporate names?

I understand that naming rights bring in a lot of dough. But why can?t it be: The Copper Bowl, sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings? The Copper Bowl once had a tradition, albeit a lightweight one. Then it became the Insight.com Bowl. Now it?s named after a chicken wing with spicy sauce.

Are there no limits to this? It used to be a joke that such a game might someday be named after adult diapers or feminine hygiene products. Now I?m not so sure. Don?t you think if the price were right they?d name a bowl game after just about anything? In such a case, if I?m a player involved in such a game, I pass on the goodie bag.

The NCAA and university presidents have become so lustful for money that they?re allowing the game itself to be pimped out like a cheap harlot. Nothing against Buffalo Wild Wings or New Era or Beef O?Brady?s or Meineke Car Care or any of the others. I?m sure they?re fine products. The names just belong on their products, not at the top of a bowl marquee.

Enough already. When there?s even a remote possibility that the championship game will eventually be named after hemorrhoid medication, that?s when this trend needs to end.

A game of pepper:

• I?d like to see a mash-up of the Charlotte Bobcats and ?The Hunger Games.? Then again, in a way, maybe that?s what we already have.

• Brandon McCarthy of the Arizona Diamondbacks got his driver?s license renewed, but it lists him as being a female. On the plus side, he?s now free to pull over and ask for directions.

• The NBA recently warned Tony Parker of the Spurs about violating its anti-flopping policy. Warned him? Did he flop or didn?t he? If he indeed flopped, shouldn?t he be fined? This is like faking Parker for faking.

• You know the guy who plays Bryan Cranston?s brother-in-law in ?Breaking Bad?? Is he coaching Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl?

• I bet a contest called ?Guess The Weight of the Fired NFL Coaches? would be a challenge.

• Someday, many years from now, Mark Sanchez will be playing catch with his grandson, and he?ll keep throwing the football to the wrong kid.

61 killed in New Year's stampede in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) ? At least 61 people were killed early Tuesday in a stampede following a New Year's fireworks display in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's commercial center, said officials.

The death toll is expected to rise, according to rescue workers.

The majority of those killed were young people between eight and 15 years old who were trampled after the fireworks festivities in Abidjan's Plateau district, at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, said Col. Issa Sako, of the fire department rescue team.

Thousands gathered at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium to see the fireworks and after the display the crowds moved out onto the Boulevard de la Republic by the Hotel Tiama, said Sako, on Ivory Coast state television.

"The flood of people leaving the stadium became a stampede which led to the deaths of more than 60 and injured more than 200," said Sako.

President Alassane Ouattara has visited some of the wounded in hospital and he pledged that his government would pay for the costs of their medical treatment, according to the president's office.

Ouattara's government organized the fireworks to celebrate Ivory Coast's peace, after several months of political violence in early 2011 following disputed elections. It was the second year that Abidjan had a New Year's fireworks display.

Desperate parents went to the city morgue, the hospital and to the stadium to try to find children who are still missing.

Mamadou Sanogo was searching for his nine-year-old son, Sayed.

"I have just seen all the bodies, but I cannot find my son," said a tearful Sanogo. "I don't know what to do."

2012 has been a majorly big year for the Stonekings...when looking back at just how much we have experienced, it blows my mind that this year has already come and gone in what seems like the blink of an eye and we're about to bring in another year. We know we are beyond blessed and have?only the Good Lord to thank for?everything He has given us. Not a day goes by where I don't (for at least one moment or two) sit back and realize just how wonderful this life is, and how I don't want to waste a single minute of it.

2013 undoubtedly will be another challenging, exciting, and whirlwind year--from what I can already tell--but I hope to live everyday better than the one before and have the opportunity to share our life with you.

In the year 2093 A.D., mankind, or the Federation of Man has spread beyond the Sol System to the Orion Spur. The Arcturus System in the Orion Spur is the very fringe of colonized space, the very fringe of known space. Though the Federation claims to espouse the ideas of liberty, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness, some disagree and are plotting open rebellion. Such groups include the Pirate Nation, and the various cells of freedom fighters collectively known as the Insurgency. One such cell of the Insurgency is operating in the Arcturus System, and is being led by a man known only by his alias, Lord Liberty. Nobody has seen his face, and like his past, his face is hidden behind a mask. To counter this growing threat to Federation sovereignty, Joint Special Operations Command has ordered three stealth frigates crewed with elite and highly trained operatives to aid the battlecruiser, the F.S.S. Salient in it's mission. However, they are also there to gather intelligence, and if possible, infiltrate and eliminate the Insurgency.

Note: Knowledge of the details in Chapter I will not be needed, though the story of Chapter I will indeed have repercussions in Chapter II as part of the dynamic Nebula's Dawn Universe.

We're currently in need of special operatives aboard the three Federation stealth frigates, the Vigilance, the Legacy, and the Redemption. The capabilities of special operatives will range depending on their specialties as a soldier, whether they are a heavy weapons role, a marksman role, a light assault role, or any other that you may come up with. They're equipment will usually consist of technology that is accessible only by them for their missions, but will usually be standard Federation equipment for Federation personnel, albeit upgraded. You may consult our technology thread for further information. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask the me via PM or through the OOC. I will try to answer your question as best I can.

I've been on Gateway for less than a year, though my username indicates a "Member of 1 Year," I've only become active since June of this year. Though, I've been roleplaying for a couple of years now, and like my fellow RPG members, I understand there's a ways ahead of me in terms improvement.
I'm a gamer and I enjoy Mass Effect and Halo, so they were some of my primary influences when I started building the world and its appearance. Of course, as a historian, I draw from history for influences and inspiration as well. I also take this story The Star by Arthur C. Clarke, to be a primary influence as well.
