LOS ANGELES?? Detectives in Los Angeles spent early Sunday analyzing security video camera footage and following up on other leads after a half dozen more vehicles were set on fire on New Year's Eve, the latest rash of suspicious car fires in the city.

The outbreak of arson fires has left a trail of smoldering debris in Hollywood, West Hollywood, North Hollywood and the Fairfax district of Los Angeles since Thursday.
Authorities said they were investigating a total of 39 suspicious fires. Most of those fires were set in parked cars. In several cases, flames have jumped to carports and apartment units.
"They are working on hundreds of clues, interviewing dozens of witnesses, picking up countless pieces of evidence," police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said of the detectives.
Authorities haven't said how the car fires were sparked or what was collected at the crime scenes. They were unsure if the rash of fires were the work of one arsonist or multiple people or copycats.
There have been no injuries.
Extra patrols were out in force on New Year's Eve. One of Saturday's attacks occurred at the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex, a popular tourist destination and hotspot for holiday revelers. Firefighters responded to a report of a small car fire in a parking structure that was out by the time they arrived.
Firefighters routinely are called to put out burning cars, but this recent spate has been unusual because of the frequency and location of the fires. Crews have been responding to other emergencies despite the focus on solving the fire arsons, fire spokesman Erik Scott said.
Police urged residents to check their cars for any signs of tampering and take simple precautions such as locking their cars, keeping the garage lights on at night and reporting suspicious activity.
"We are not going to rest," Los Angeles Fire Department assistant chief Pat Butler said Sunday at a joint police-fire news conference. "We are going to work tirelessly."

Robert Bates, age 80, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, December 30, 2011 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2012 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Bob Wollenberg and Rev. Herb Yoder officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Monday at the United Presbyterian Church where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. and also following the services. Private family interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Washington County. Charles Robert Bates was born December 12, 1931 in Burlington, Iowa the son of Charles and Bessie (Blanchard) Bates. He graduated from Wapello High School. Robert received his Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Iowa. On November 18, 1962, he was united in marriage to Martha J. Potts in Albia, Iowa.
Robert practiced law from 1960 until 1981 when he was appointed to the District Court. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Washington Noon Kiwanis, the United Presbyterian Home Board of Directors, Washington Community Chest, and the Washington Y's Men. Robert was a fifty year member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Judges Association.
Robert is survived by his daughter Karen Bates Chabal and husband Ed of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; son Brian Bates of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren Ryan Chabal and Kathryn Chabal of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and sister Betty Jean Bayne of Marion, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Martha in 2009.

California church?s stylized Nativity scene with gay, lesbian depiction vandalized

Claremont, USA - Vandalism of a church?s Nativity display that includes depictions of gay and lesbian couples was being investigated as a hate crime, police said.
The damage at Claremont United Methodist Church occurred late Saturday or Sunday morning.
The display?s three panels feature silhouettes of three hand-holding couples ? two men, two women and a heterosexual pair. The vandal knocked over the depictions of the gay and lesbian couples but left the straight couple alone.
?It?s a hate crime based on it being church property as well as the wooden box knocked over that depicted two males holding hands,? Claremont police Sgt. Jason Walters told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
The display created by artist church member John Zachary includes the phrase ?Christ is born? and a Star of Bethlehem but no traditional manger figures. For the past six years, Zachary has designed and built a scene on the church?s front lawn. The scene has had controversial themes before, but this was the first about gay couples, the Daily Bulletin said.
Zachary said the artwork suffered at least $3,000 worth of damage. The exhibit had three panels that weighed 600 pounds each.
The Rev. Dan Lewis said he was saddened by the incident.
?We have members of our church who are gay and lesbian who it sends a very personal message to,? said Lewis, who learned of the vandalism on Christmas Day. ?I tried to say in worship on Sunday morning that we will not let it trouble us.?
Ed Kania, 60, an openly gay member of the church, called the act of vandalism disappointing, especially because Claremont is a generally seen as a progressive college town.
?It?s a reminder that although there are pockets of acceptance, not everybody is accepting,? he told the Los Angeles Times. ?We?re all kind of disappointed, but we?re using it as a rallying point.?
